Help with Gough family Liverpool please
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 15:19 UTC (UK) »

I am researching above but have hit a brick wall. I have found John Gough and wife Rose A and sister-in-law on 1891 census.  But am unable to find a trace of them or their family on 1901.  I believe they may have had three children.  Nicholas, Jack(John?) and James, and they were married at St  Augustines in 1891.  Any help would be appreciated.

To help searching, here's the 1891 details:

RG12/2903/99/10 - 159 Athol St, Liverpool
John GOUGH - Head - 22 - Fireman Marine - Ireland
Rose A GOUGH - Wife - 21 - Liverpool
Jane BRADY - Sister-in-law - 24 - General Servant - Liverpool

Not that it's getting me anywhere in 1901 so far!

Using the free 1911 index - there is a Nicholas Gough aged 19 (1892) b Liverpool and living in Liverpool

It cross refers to there being a John Gough in the same household but not to a Rose or a James

Fireman Marine

As far as I'm aware, a marine fireman is also known as a stoker. And a stoker is someone who fires the engine on a steamship. Maybe worthwhile looking for him in the seaman's index at find my past.

And have you tried the Picton Library (the main library) in Liverpool. Or the maritime museum archive in Liverpool?

Hi Jenny

Which of the children are you particularly interested in as it may be easier to concentrate on that child as you will have more info about their life and we may be able to trace the family using that info

Thanks for all the help.  The child I am particularly interested in is James.  Born I believe in Liverpool around 1891, although I haven't found a birth for him in 1891 so that might not be correct.  I know he married a Kathleen Walsh and had three children Jim(james), Mary and Philip.

Just had confirmation that Jack was killed in first world war, but should still have been in 1901 census.

well I suppose, to a degree, a leap of faith.  I was told definitely that James had two brothers Nick and Jack and that their father's name was John.  I found a John Gough born to a Nicholas Gough and Bridget Gough on an 1881 census and his year of birth was 1869.  I then forwarded to 1891 census where a John Gough was married to a Rose Brady although no children were born, I figured that perhaps if James was indeed born in 1891 it may have been after the census date.

Hi

That's not good news.  Unfortunately that combination does not always work with FH.

Do you know for certain that all 3 boys were actually born in Liverpool and not somewhere else?

You are going to need to buy a copy of James' 1920 marriage cert to check his age at that time and also confirm his fathers name and occupation

Do you have any info on who Nicholas married and where?

A possible entry for John and Rose in 1901 - the details aren't a perfect match, but it's the closest I've found.  If correct, this would seem to rule them out as James' parents.

RG13/3460/100/37 - 53 Seaforth St, Bootle cum Linacre, Lancs
John GOUGH - Head - 38 - General Labourer - Ireland
Rose GOUGH - Wife - 33 - South Wales NK

Yes I think you are right about the marriage certificate.  I am also expecting some more details re Jack who died in World War 1 so that may prove helpful.  Unfortunately the marriage cert only ever gives the father's name doesn't it.  No I don't know if Nicholas ever married although I did look into 1911 census where it records John Gough as a widower living with his sons Nicholas 19 and John (presumably Jack) aged 16 which does tie in nicely as James could have been working away somewhere I suppose.  But then I found a James Gough on a 1911 census aged 20 in Liverpool living with a Richard Gough aged 25 and his wife Mary aged 20 and recorded as brother, so everything began to unravel again.  I don't believe the family moved away from Liverpool until the present generation when one member does live in the Midlands.  On the 1891 census which records Rose and John Gough her birthplace is given as Liverpool but of course this could be incorrect.  I suppose I could try for their marriage cert but am loathe to do so if I am barking up the wrong tree.  Of course I know eventually if I get back far enough all road lead to Ireland!!!
