Dad's friends in Sussex (possibly)
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 15:38 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone recognize anybody in the attached photo?  Our best guess is that it was taken between 1920 and 1929 and may be of carpenters and wheelwrights in Alfriston Sussex.

I've zoomed this as far as I can and the boxes on out right are tea chests and on the left marked Prices (as in candles) I had a wooden box exactly like that for years in my garage as a junk box. With a mixture like that I  can only think of a grocer or wholesaler where they were unpacking boxes, or a customs inspection shed although it looks a bit small for that. I think wheelwrights are right out. Pete

Sorry for the delay in posting a reply - change to Windows 7 not without its problems!  Your cleverness in discerning the Price's Candles boxes was the clue I needed but in a completely different direction!  Dad's older brother, about whom we knew little, died in 1921 at the age of 18.  His death cert records that he was, wait for it, a packer in a candle factory!  He lived in Battersea where, up till just a few years ago, Price's candles had, in York Road, their London factory.  It seems fairly certain that a.  whoever wrote (Dad's friends) on the back of the photo was guessing and b.  the young gent on the right of the photo could well be Uncle Edward.  OK, not 100% but good enough to get us all checking other photos for family likenesses!
So thanks again Petmas, proof positive that RootsChat and RootsChatters works!  Now for the unidentified chap in Edinburgh!
