A clean and colour if possible please
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 17:24 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

I would be really grateful if this photo taken about 1895 of 4 generations could be tidied up - my cousin has never seen an image of her grandmother as she died at age 33 leaving a very young family.

Many thanks,
Alison

Hi Alison

I've just noticed that this is in danger of dropping off the top page.

It's a lovely photo but, although scanned at 600, it is showing very high jpg compression which means that any restoration is limited - e.g. the faces are likely to be unrecognisable if the compression was taken out.

I've enlarged it so that you can see what it would look like for us to work with.

Is it possible for you to rescan with no jpg compression?

Regards

Hi Gadget,
Unfortunately I don't have the original but I have rescanned my copy hoping this will be better for restoration,
Many thanks,
Alison

Sorry, Alison.  It's no better really  Sad

What is your copy like?  Is it a photocopy? How big is it and does it look like the one you've scanned?

The image seems to have a kind of check pattern on it in large blocks as if something is coming through from the back and there is white around the figures/at the edges of the tonal shifts.

Gadget

Added - this may sound daft but try scanning at say 72- 100 dpi but specify no jpg compression

Hi Gadget,

I cant get it to reduce in size  to 500 kb without causing these distortions on the picture unfortunately

Regards

Alison

Ooh its worked now  Huh

PS please remove the writing at the bottom as the photo is incorrectly labelled (in my opinion anyway)

Hi all

I've got a huge scan from Alison if anyone wants it. i've reduced it to 300 dpi and made it smaller dimensionally.

It's got some yellow lines on it but I'd think they're fairly easy to take out.

and a sepia one.

I'm not sure about colour but I'll see if I can come up with something.

PS - I've added some texture(noise) to give it a bit more depth

Hi Gadget,
They are both fantastic - the faces are clearer now. I love the nosey neighbour in the background as well!

Many many thanks for your hard work and time spent on this restore,

Regards,
Alison
