Mariners Freechurch
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 18:03 UTC (UK) »

I seem to be coming up with more questions than answers.
Looking for details of a marriage of John Brown and Margaret or Martha Scott and also the birth certificate of Hamilton Brown born 1852-4.  I have looked on  SP and also IGI Scotland without any luck.  I went to the Mariners Free Church site but could not see anywhere you may be able to research marriages blessed in their church.  Can anyone help.  John was a merchant seaman
marcie:

I must admit I am jumping around a bit.  But I need to clean up my loose ends on both sides of the family and as every one has found having family members with the same names does not make life easy.  You think you have the right person until you do the maths.

I have whilst doing my research come up with items which I will post under the names mentioned so anyone whose interest is in that name will have to take a look to see if there is a connection.

You'll not find a birth certificate per se prior to 1855 when Civil Registration began in Scotland.

However, Hamilton Brown was apparently born 12 Dec 1852, baptised 20 Jan 1852 in South Leith, to John Brown and Margaret Scott.  A number of other children for this couple show up on the IGI from 1847-1863.  There is one - Ann Nelson Brown - who was born in 1855 which is the jackpot as far as Scottish certificates go since in that year they recorded much more information than at any other time e.g. number of children the couple already had.  And the parents' marriage place and date is also included on any birth certificate .  However the marriage is there on ScotlandsPeople in 1846 in South Leith.  It will cost you 6 credits in total to view the entry (not a proper certificate since this is before 1855) in the register.

The other children are:
John (1847), William Hamilton (1850), John 1859), Thomson (1860) and James Scott (1863).

Lots to go on.  Wink

So I was thinking that i should be able to pick up the youngest on the 1851, the others on 1861 and the remaining few on the 1871 census.
marcie.   and thanks again.  I think he is a cousin of my grgrgrandfather Robert.

The older child John is not recorded on the census with his parents in 1851 and given that there is another John in the family later, I think he died before the census.

They are recorded at Sheriff Brae in Leith, John is a sailor born in Leith while Margaret was born in Edinburgh.

Interestingly there is another Hamilton Brown in Leith in 1851, with a father called Hamilton, who was a slater.
