Kilts
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 18:20 UTC (UK) »

I am distantly scottish.  My mother was born in scotland and as a young girl right up into my teens, I would occasionally be given our buy a kilt.  Either a red one or green, either scott or smith.
I am not a dressmaker so I do not know the difference between warp and weft.  But I understand that one is the male line and the other is the female line;  but my question is, which is which

Hi Steve,

So I take it that warp is straight up and weft comes in from the side = female line.?

Yeppers. Bang on, Marcie.

It should be said though that some cultures ~ just to be bloody minded, I'm sure! ~ actually state that the threads are 'genderised' the other way round.

Consensus though is that the Warp's the male and goes vertical  Smiley

I would be very interested in knowing where the information about male and female comes from - does it refer to the patterns of the warp and weft being inherited down these lines?  I thought the warp was a single colour and only the weft changed during weaving?

Anyway, here is a website that you might find useful, and perhaps if you emailed them they might be able to give you some more information (I couldn't find anything online about male and female):

Prue; Feed " Warp Weft Male Female " into Google. It's really quite weird.

There's absolutely tons of stuff about Looms and so forth. But, ye'll also pick up how there appears to be a strong association with eastern 'religious' type ideas ~ dare I say? ~ woven into it all.

And hey, you peeps; Don't forget Eire has County 'Tartans' too. Co. Leitrim's is green and yellow check  Smiley

It should be said that the kilt is an exclusively male garment.

My understanding is that the tartans gradually change throughout the centuries, due to the fact the head of the household "which scottish men protest is themselves" Grin chooses to marry alters the look slightly by incorporating the colours of the spouses line into it.
If I had a kilt made could you imagine.  I have Smith, (McGowan?))Kirkwood,Brown,(McPherson)Laidlaw(Scott) Hamilton, Campbell, McDonald.  God knows what that would look like.  Does anyone fancy designing a kilt of their or mine mix of lineage.!!! just for fun.  anyone who can draw./paint.
Take a photo and place it on here.

Well you learn something new every day  Grin I never knew there were 'male' and 'female' tartans.

It should be said that the kilt is an exclusively male garment.

Hibee

Presumably as men wear the kilt then the women wear the - not sure what it's called - but it goes over one shoulder and down the side of the dress?
