Family tree online
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 20:42 UTC (UK) »

Hi Everyone
I have just read about the dangers of putting your family history tree online.
I am a little worried because my tree (as big as it is!) is online.
I have gone bak to check it and there are no living people on there or any addresses, what other dangers are there in putting a tree online?

There aren't any dangers of putting your family tree on-line.

Has anyone sued genesreunited for including living relatives?

Please list all the cases where someone's identity has been stolen from a site hosting family trees.  Please list all the cases of fraud that can be attributed to details from a family tree hosting site.

If you saw the film The Day of the Jackal then you should realise that dead people can have their identity stolen as well as living people.

If you haven't got any living relatives on there then I don't see how there can be dangers, as such!

However, it really depends on how you feel about your research. A lot of people feel quite upset if their carefully researched information is plastered all over the internet in a casual manner. If it doesn't worry you that other people will lift your data and apply it in inappropriate contexts all over the place, then you have nothing to fear  Grin
