Hi, can anyone tell me how far back we can check in the St Sampson parish records of Cricklade?? or other parishes nearby for that matter.
I have possible ancestry going back to about 1671 or 1690! All a bit hazy but have a little info.
Thnx

Hi Miranda

It looks as though the answer is 1672

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WIL/CrickladeStSampson/index.htm

Unless your GILES family used St Mary's Cricklade, which is just a hop, skip and a jump down the High Street, where the records begin in the 1690s (but they are online!)

http://welcome.to/friendsofstmarys/

Still plenty of GILESes in Cricklade!

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

The Bishops' Transcripts for Cricklade St Mary go back to 1605 and for Cricklade St Sampson go back to 1599 at the Wiltshire Records Office, although some years are missing.

Looking for John Giles born c1691 baptised 13/7/1691 Cricklade.
Believe he may have been a reverened at Long newton.
Believe he may have married and elizabeth Estcourt born c 1691 (not sure) at Long Newton.
Is there any other information out there on him? he was my 6x great grandfather.
Believe Elizabeth was possibly gentry! again not confirmed.
John's father was Zacharia but again have no other information on him.
can anyone help as I cant get to wiltshire/cricklade for some time.

thank you.

Hi Miranda,

I am afraid there seems to be a problem here  Cry

There is a John baptised in Cricklade St Sampson  to Zachariah 6 Jan 1691

Siblings

Rebecca 14 Dec 1690
Anne 10 Mar 1694
Mary 7 Dec 1699
William 10 Aug 1701

Looks like this John may have had his first child Zacharias baptised in Cricklade St Sampson 22 Nov 1715

Now this marriage you mention

John GILES Rector = Elizabeth ESTCOURT Gentlewoman took place on the 13 July 1691 at Long Newton, so it cannot be the same person  Cry

Entered in the parish register for Ashley

Memorandum of Induction: 27 May 1692 of John GILES Rector of Newton into the Church and Rectory of Ashley by Mr John Scrambler Rector of Crudwell, Wilts and 1692 marriages by me John GILES Rector of Ashley

AAAh, ok, I will look at my info again, maybe I have got confused! It seems quite easy to get confused over dates and information etc.  Thank you for that.  I will post back here when I have looked into it more.
cheers Kris

I am going back to 1846 and starting with charles Giles b c1846 m to Mary Tyler b c1842 and then I will work my way back again.  I guess I need to get hold of parish records at some point.

If this is right I am not seeing a connection to the Rev. Of course there may be a connection prior to this time but he is not a direct ancestor by the look of this. The Rev was married the same year as John was born to Zachariah.

There is a marriage licence bond looks interesting -  but a few years after John's birth. It does not mention he is widowed. I wonder if this may be a late marriage - often preferable with the upper class to ensure the woman is fertile before the marriage, or if it may even be a second marriage. (there is a five year gap in the baptisms I have found)

GYLES Zachery Yeoman of Cricklade and STRATFORD Ann of Cricklade 30 July 1698 - marriage to take place at Inglesham. Bondsman William Strange - Tiler of Cricklade.

Unfortunately I don't see the marriage listed at Inglesham

also this one I will mention just in case as my lot jump about between Purton and Cricklade

John GILES Yeoman of Purton and Anne OSBOURNE spinster of Rodbourne Cheney 3 Nov 1715. Bondsman John King gentleman of South Masdon

Hi Kris, thanx for that.
I can confirm that my Charles Giles's was 20 in 1866 (Dec 25th)  when he married Mary Ann Tyler who was 21.  Charles' father is George Giles.
Chalres' son is also called George and he married Harriet Mills in 1890.
Chris are you on genes reunited? I have my family tree on there, I could send you a pm so you can access it.  May help.

thnx Miranda  Smiley

Just an extra piece of info, I have just found a copy of George Giles' birth cert.  he was born 13th Sept 1867, Father Charles Giles (Collier) and mother Mary Ann Giles (formerly Tyler).  Registered on the 8th October 1867.

I know that is definitely correct as the family often talked about them. Hope this helps further!

Hi Miranda,

Thats what I get for jumping in without really looking. I missed that one.  Embarrassed

I discounted the one born in 1850 due to the 1866 marriage

This looks like he must be yours.

GILES Charles was baptised 21 Feb 1847 Cricklade St Sampson parents George and Martha

GILES George = BARNES Martha 15 Oct 1832

maybe - GILES George 9 Dec 1799 parents Zachery and Mary (Listed earlier)

No, I don't have GR
