I just found my gr-gr-grandmother who had been "missing" for many years due to the fact that she'd remarried! I've just received her death registration copy and am wondering what the chances are of locating her in a Preston cemetery from here in the US.
Here are the details: Emily Wilkinson, d. 30 December 1934, age 72 wife of Carey Wilkinson sub-district of Preston East in the county borough of Preston WD
Her maiden name was Spratt and she was also the widow of a William Bond who died between 1904-06 (therefore the difficulty in locating her after my gr-grandmother left England with her grandmother in 1893 at the age of 9).
Any thoughts on where to look are greatly appreciated.

There's only one main cemetery in Preston, which is the most likely burial place, although burials would still have been taking place in churchyards of some churches.
The cemetery records are on microfilm at Lancashire Records Office:
http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/education/record_office/
and it might be worth emailing them to see how they can help.
An alternative is to use:
http://www.cemsearch.co.uk/preston/preston.html
who will send you a report on all gravestones in the cemetery with a particular surname for £6.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Emily Wilkinson was buried in a public grave S 718 in the Church of England section on the 2nd January 1935. Next of kin was Carey Wilkinson, address 54 Hopwood Street, Preston.
Kind regards
Simon

I've just been and had a look for 54 Hopwood Street with a view to taking a photograph, I'm afraid all the houses on that side of the street have been demolished and replaced with apartment blocks.
Kind regards
Simon

Simon, Thank you so much for all of that effort. I guess I'm not surprised about the public grave. I was hoping she'd made out a little better after her mother left with the child but it looks like she didn't. At least I have some sort of an ending to her story. We never knew why she was left behind when my gr-gr-gr grandmother came here with Emily's daughter but we this new info gives us more than we had before! I really appreciate it! Wendy
