Latvian immigrants

Could anyone tell me the best way to search for ancestors/relatives of my father in law, who came to UK in 1945 from Latvia as a displaced person.

Do you have any information about where in Latvia he was from?

These are the state archives:

They do seem to have some genealogy information online, but say:
Quote
Archives keep birth, marriage and death records only until 1905. The records for 1906–1921 are kept in the Registry Office Archives of the Ministry of Justice in Rīgā, Kaļķu ielā 24. Records after 1921 are kept in the districts’ Registry Offices according to the place of birth, marriage and death.

You could try searching for his surname at http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ (might find his naturalisation or other records related to him or other family members who came to the UK, if any).
If he married in the UK that could give you his father's name.

Thanks for the reply Jorose.
The only info I have is that he was from the Riga area, He came here between 1945 & 1947 and married in Scunthorpe in 1951.
Many thanks for the info you have given me, I will give it a try.
