Wicker family living Stock, Essex in 1837
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 10:53 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,

I am looking for information on the Wicker family living in Stock, Essex in 1837.

My specific interest is in the birth and/or christening records for a Robert Wicker (born abt 1809) and Henry Wicker (born abt 1819).  Most likely brothers.

They were convicted for horse stealing in 1837.  The Old Baileys court record says that Robert Wicker was living with his mother in Stock, Essex, England when he committed a crime at Horndon-on-the-Hill in Essex. (proceedings 14 Aug 1837)  Both Robert and Henry Wicker were convicted and transported for life to Van Diemans Land, Australia.

I believe the parents may be Thomas and Sarah. Sarah's maiden name may be Brazer or Brayer.

Robert & Henry could also have another brother who’s names would be John (born abt 1815).

I would love to locate their birth and/or christening records and confirm their birth dates, place of birth, parents and other siblings.
I am from Australia  and any assistance and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in anticipation Lyndy02   Smiley

Hi,

Thomas Wicker and Sarah Brader were married on the 17th June 1811 in St Leonard, Shoreditch, London.

It looks as though it was Robert and John who were transported to Van Diemans Land, and not Henry.

After Robert's trial at the Old Bailey he was transported on the vessel Moffatt.

Henry married Sarah Rayner, and had children Eliza b.1842,Henry b.1845, Sarah Ann b.1850 and Walter b.1852.

John Wicker b1816 was transported aged 19years, and his trial was on the 1st December 1835.

I will have alook to see if I can find any baptisms.

Hope this helps,
Regards.

Parish records to 1804 are on the SEAX site, but may be too early for what you want

Hi all,

Thanks so much for this, this information is greatly appreciated.  Thomas Wicker and Sarah Brader may just be the parents.  Smiley

I do know that Robert and Henry were tried together at the Old Bailey's and both transported to Australia on the Moffatt in 1837. I can trace both of them here in Australia (luckily Wicker was not a popular surname in Aust back then).

It is Henry who is my direct ancestor, but I can not link Robert, Henry and John (other than a common surnames and all getting transported to Australia).  Which may be pure coincidence!

However, at various stages after 1837, they were certainly together and obviously knew each other. For instance, Robert Wicker was present when Henry was married here in Australia in 1848.  Henry's daughter Sarah died at Roberts home in Victoria Australia in 1866.    John and Henry sailed on the same ship departing Tasmania bound for Victoria  in 1852.

Henry was only 18 when he was transported to Aus. I do not know if Robert and John are older brothers as I can not trace them or their family prior to 1837. My dilemma!  Huh

Once again, thanks for any assistance as I am at a dead end!
