ARDLE MCKENNA AND ELIZABETH HARKINS
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 14:15 UTC (UK) »

Hi there

I looking for the family of Ardle McKenna born around 1825 and his wife Elizabeth Harkins also born in Ireland.  Ardle moved to Stirlingshire before his children were born but I'm struggling to find any certificates, Birth, marriage or death.  He MUST have died in Scotland but maybe he married in Ireland before emigrating.  Anyone with any connections to these names, please get in touch.

You haven't given a possible date for the marriage or what religion the family was but civil registration of Catholic marriages started in 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages). Civil registration of births and deaths also started in 1864 so their will be no certificates before these dates.
Scottish birth certificates usually give far more details than Irish ones and some Scottish certificates give date and place of parents' marriage so chek Scotland's People website to see coverage (from memory, 1855 birth certificates might contain the most details so it would be a real bonus if one of the children was born then in Scotland).

Cheers.

it seems Ardle and Elizabeth's first child William was born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire in 1849.  I've trailed through Scotland's people for marriage and death certs for both and can't seem to find them.  I can find nothing to indicate their parents names but I haven't given up - still trying.

Oh and they were Catholic, at least my ancestor, their daughter Margaret, was married in a local RC church.

As I suggested earlier, birth certificates of children born in Scotland might give date and place of parents' marriage.
IGI (www.familysearch.org) lists 4 children-
1. John born 22 Jan.180 Bo'Ness, West Lothian
2. Elizabeth born 15 Feb.1862 Bo'Ness, West Lothian
3. Francis born 10 Apr.1864 Balingry, Fife
4. Catherine born 24 Sept.1876 Dunipace, Stirling

1871 the family is in Dunapace, Stirlingshire-
Ardle McKenna 46 Ireland (born c1825), Elizabeth 39 Ireland (born c1832), William 22 Alloa, Rose Ann 20 Linlithgow, Margaret 17 Boness, James 15 Rossall Lanark., John 11 Boness, Francis 7 Benary Fife, Elizabeth 5 Dunipace, Patrick 2 Dunipace, Catherine  mo. Dunipace. Note: order & ages of some children not same as IGI information.

I don't see Ardle McKenna in any later Scottish census.

Added- checked index to Irish Civil registrations to see if there's a death for Ardle McKenna in Ireland after 1871-
Ardle Mckenna Death 1869 Clogher registration district (age 74).
Ardle M'Kenna Death Apr./June 1889 Monaghan registration district (age 70) volume 3 page 170
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347
There was certainly more than 1 Ardle McKenna in Monaghan so it's not clear if the 1889 death is the person you are searching for but if you think it is just be aware that Irish death certificates give little detail (name, date and place of death, cause of death, age in years, marital status, occupation, name of informant)- spouse, children, parents, birthplace and birthdate, place of burial not listed.

Thanks for the tips.

I'm pretty sure Ardle died in Scotland because Elizabeth is still resident there when their daughter dies in 1891, though Ardle is dead.  Their daughter Margaret was only 34, so they wouldn't have been too old themselves.

I shall keep delving.  It seems Ardle and Elizabeth's death certificates will be my only hope of following the family.

Thanks again
