complete newbie here, Fort Leith 1889
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 15:59 UTC (UK) »

hi all, glad i've found this site but could really do with any help at all just to get me started.I'm looking for my grandfather William Crawford Walker from Fort Leith, born 1889.i know he ran away to sea in his teens but am hoping he's on the 1891 census.he eventually ended up living out his years in Salford near manchester. Not a lot to go on but a little glimmer of light is all the encouragement i need.If any additional info is available i'd be very grateful,
thanks for taking time to read this

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Do you know the names of his parents?

Was he born in Leith or did he just live there after his marriage

He should be on both the 1891 and 1901 given he was only 12 in 1901 but there are quite a few William Walkers but no William C Walker so I want to be sure I have the right entry

Hi Graham

There are 2 births showing on Scotland's People for William Crawfor Walker
1889 Leith Midlothian <-- probably yours
1895 Dumfries

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (official BMD website for Scotland)

This should give you the names of both his parents and when they married.

Hi Graham

It was more commonly known as Leith Fort.

You can find it near the centre of this map....

When you say he ran away to sea, does that mean he was in the navy? If so you might find that they still have records. It might be worth contacting them and asking.

Navy

Army

Air Force

The Inter Services Boxing Championships are still being held. Someone must have archives. The MOD rarely seems to dispose of anything!
