More help needed with birth & census's please
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 18:48 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to find the birth of George Henry Leach or Leech  about 1865/6 in Manchester. I can't find him on 1881 & 1871 census's either.
I have now been to Central Library Manchester & got his first marriage to Mary Burns in 1884. They were married at St Clements Church Longsight. He is down as Leech, Mechanic aged 19. His Father is Thomas Leech a joiner. The witnesses are James Mellor & Elizabeth White so there are no clues there.
On 1891 census he is again Leech aged 26 a labourer living in Chorlton Ardwick. On 1901 census  he is again Leech aged 35 living in Dukinfield Ashton U Lyne & working in a brickworks. In 1911 he spells his name Leach is 47 a labourer living in Hyde. His war records say he is George Leach & give various ages on different pages. His second marriage in 1923 he is George Henry Leach aged 54, widower, labourer & his Father Thomas Leach labourer dec eased. He died in 1927 aged 59.
I want to get his birth certificate but I don't have enough info. He states on the censuses that he was born Manchester. I need 1881 & 1871 censuses to confirm a few things.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks Sossle

Hi,

Looking on FreeBMD, there are only two births for a George Leech in Manchester between 1865/66;

March qtr 1865 M/C  8d 206
Sept qtr  1866 M/C 8d 277

Ask GRO for a search on both by naming father that you got from marriage.  Cost is £4 for each search,  cheaper than paying for both certificates.  They will let you know which is the right one and then you can purchase right one.

Hi,

Just my thoughts...

Looking at www.Cheshirebmd.org.uk there is a George Henry Leech born in the sub district of Dukinfield in 1866.

The 1871 census has a George Harry Leech (transcribed as George Hart Leech) born S.B. living in Dukinfield aged 5 with widowed mother Adelaide aged 38 born Manchester and all the other children were born Manchester,  Reference is RG10/4085 Folio 38 page 17.   Going back to the 1861 before George was born the father was Thomas Leech, aged 38, a Machine Glaser born Manchester.  Reference RG9/2997 folio 109 page 13.

I am just wondering if he thought he was born Manchester like the rest of his siblings and parents.

Regards,
Mo

Hi,

Mother Adelaide Leech formerly Wood remarried in 1872 to a George Hamer at Manchester Cathedral.  The 1881 census has:

33 Stamford Street, Stalybridge
George Hamer, Head, Mar, 44, Pit (Coal) Labourer, Stalybridge
Adeline Hamer, Wife, Mar, 44 Roll Eyes, born North Mill, Manchester
Emily Mott, Step Daur, 26, Cotton Frame Tenter, Hulme Manchester
GEORGE LEECH, Step Son, 15, Apprentice Machine Maker, Stalybridge Cheshire

George occupation would certainly tie in with him being a mechanic on his marriage.
