Mary Court b. c.1834 Wellesbourne, Warwickshire
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 21:14 UTC (UK) »

Hello.

I am trying to find all I can about Mary Court, born in Wellsbourne, Warwickshire in about 1834.  I have quite a bit except I don't have any birth or baptism records for her.  I wonder if someone out there could possibly have a look for me.  I've done a search on LDS but nothing. Or I may not be doing a good enough search I guess!

This is what I do know:

I think Mary's parents were John Court (b. 1803) and Mary [possibly nee Knight] [b.1806).  John and Mary Court ran a blacksmiths in Wellesbourne in the first half of the 19th century.

Mary Court had an illegitimate child born 24th February 1857 and named Cecil Court.  Cecil was born in Wellesbourne.

There are NO certain census records for Mary in the 1841 census.  She first appears in the 1851 census as a servant in Claverdon, Warwickshire.  Nothing for 1861.  She then appears on the 1871 census as a married woman.  Her married name is Mary Swait.  There is a record for her marriage to John Swait in London in 1862. Cecil lives with the family in London when he is 14 but he is listed as "nephew"  I'm thinking that's just a cover because he can't be her son and not have the family sirname so the nephew it avoided embarrassment.

Cecil IS listed on the 1861 census when he is a little boy living with John and Mary Court and listed as grandson (this is why I believe Mary is their daughter).  But no mention of Mary at at, either in their home or elsewhere.

Curiously, John and Mary Court are listed on the 1841 census but Mary is not there even though she would have been a little girl at the time.  Or she is there but as a different Christian name which I suppose is possible.  There are 2 other Mary Court's born  in Warwickshire in a 5 year window of her birthdate found in the 1841 census.  One or the other may be my Mary but given the lack of detail its impossible to say for sure.

I know its going to be next to impossible to find the real father of Cecil.  Her marriage to John Swait doesn't occur until 5 years after Cecil is born so I doubt he is the father.  My guess is she was in service and fell pregnant at that time. She had the baby which was brought up by her parents while she carried on working wherever.  Then when she was married and settled Cecil came to live with her as her "nephew".

I am going to send for Mary's marriage record to John Swait.  This will at least confirm who her father is.  But if someone can find some record of her baptism or birth that would be great.
