1911 Census - how wonderful to research!
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 21:28 UTC (UK) »

I just wanted to share with you that I've just invested in a subscription on FMP to the 1911 Census, and how wonderful it is to research when you're not counting every penny and trying to decide if it's worth a punt on the image, or whether it's better to look at a transcript for only 10 credits  Roll Eyes

Solving - and finding - new mysteries at every turn  Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy

Couldn't agree more - best £60 I've spent recently

And the good news is that FMP have increased the "fair usage" credits from 1000 to 5000 per month over a rolling 3 month period

I agree too Cheesy

Hubby treated me to a subscription ( Kiss) and it's wonderful looking at the actual household schedules.  The best bit for me is where it tells you how many live births in the marriage there was.............makes me realise how many children I've missed in my search Grin

You're so right.  I've been researching the maternal line of a connection of mine in Canada, and had turned up an uncle for her of whom she had never heard.  Given it was a close knit family from Lancashire who all emigrated together to Vancouver, she couldn't make any sense of it. In fact, it quite worried her that she couldn't pin him down.

Well, today I looked him up in the 1911 Census and found him in Bolton with his wife (who I knew about) and a daughter (who I didn't).  Following up this daughter produced a marriage and a husband's name and lo and behold my connection remembered Violet and Percy and, from them, her Uncle Jack!

Well done the 1911!

I really don't understand it. Maybe he was down the coal mine and no one entered him.

Mum said that he lived with them - he was there on the 1901 and then he joined the West Yorks in WW1 and was captured and in a PoW camp and  was returned to Britain ( via Hull) in 1918. I have all the WW1 details and letters.  Then he was supposed to have died of Flu.

But can I find him on the 1911 or a death cert - only one is in Sunderland and I suppose I should get it but I don't believe he could have gone to Sunderland  Undecided

got lots of other rellies though  Cheesy

Yep - I've tried every permutation that I can think of - even on 1911 itself with the credits - giving so little info that the page looked blank  Lips Sealed

I'm not exactly a novice at searching   Undecided

Now you are all making me think twice Undecided  I feel so envious.

Having spent about £70.00 on credits, I said after that I would wait for Ancestry to have the records.  I only managed to get one family in Wales, good going since it was an Evans, the other one is Davies Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Has anyone bought a six month subscription to the 1911 only, for about £35.00, wondering if it is still available.

Yes, its great.  I only subscribed very recently and I've looked at hundreds of returns.  It would have cost me an absolute fortune under the credit system!

This is true. I found one of my relatives -Philip McGurn - down as Philip W Gurn.

Looking at the image Philip had written the small c at the top with a little line under it, which is how I was taught as a child to write it down. However the transcriber obviously thought it was an initial and although looks like the letter M had transcribed it as a W. Sad
