Boland family from Co. Tipperary
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 23:56 UTC (UK) »

Would some kind person help? I am at a loss around 1815! My family history shows that James Boland was born in Mogglass, County Tipperary in 1815. He had four children I know of with Ellen (nee Nagle/Neagle). William P. born 1854, Michael J. born 1855, Jeremiah died 1880 and Kate who has no records. I also know that his mother (Boland side)died and was buried in Mogglass in January 1865. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Shawn Boland

Thanks for the link Dara. Too bad it isn't the family I am looking for. I appreciate you taking the time to read and reply to my post. Hopefully there will be more replies.

Check the National Library site to see what records are available:

http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx

Check this thread to see why the records are not online:

The parish records for Moglass/Moyglass are on microfilm for personal research in the National Library Dublin P 2494 - Baptisms start from Jan 1814. Marriages from 1812 but some dates are missing. You can commission research from the TFHR at http://www.tfhr.org/ It  has all the records for the diocese of Cashel and Emly.
Did any of James' sons remain in Ireland? There are two Boland families showing in the Killenaule area in the 1911 census- different townlands and ages are not exact  but may be worthwhile looking at.

annclare,
Thank you for the links. James' family moved to Newfoundland in the mid to late 1800's (I think). There was a Jeremiah who died in 1880. There is no record of he or Kate in Newfoundland records. Since James' mother passed away in Moglass in 1865, I would imagine that they were still living there as a family at that time. Is there any way to find headstone inscriptions from that area? I had a look at the current layout of Moglass and surrounding towns and there seems to be a limited number of Catholic churches. Do they all have cemeteries? Sorry for the extra questions but being so far away and not being familiar with the land makes it difficult to envision the ease/complexity of finding out answers.

thanks again,

I'm not that familiar with the cemeteries in that area. There is one at Moyglass and one in the grounds of the Augustinian Abbey in Fethard. But as far as I know there are very few gravestone inscriptions from that area on line.
You could post a message on the Fethard forum at http://www.fethard.com/index.php
and somebody there may be able to help as they seem to have a very active local history society.
