Trewidwall and Llwyndafydd, St. Dogmells
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 02:34 UTC (UK) »

I've just received the marriage certificate for William LADD and  Phoebe DAVIES, 30 Dec 1876 at the Register Office in the District of Cardigan in the county of Cardigan and Pembroke, fathers David Ladd and      John Davies, both deceased.  Their residences at the time of their marriage were listed as Trewidwall, St. Dogmells, and Llwyndafydd, St. Dogmells, respectively.

Does anyone know if these locations are farms , streets or villages, etc???

just checking on the 1881 census and Trewidwal appears to be a farm occupied by the Ladd family headed by Mary A born Abergwaun (Fishguard) RG11/5428 folio 64 pg 18.

Llwyndafydd also a farm and it's where the Davies were in 1861 RG9/4176 folio 46 pg 16 and 1871 RG10/5540 folio 22 pg 10. It's in Bridgend.

St Dogmaels isn't always in Pembrokeshire in the census entries. It's sometimes in Cardiganshire, It's only just over the river from Cardigan - walking distance.

Dear Osprey...thanks so much for that information.  Up until yesterday , I did not have the correct maiden name for Phoebe.  On her son's marriage licence here in Canada, it was written as Davis.  So thanks to you, I can look into her family.  I find it interesting that in Wales, all the farms have proper names...not like here in most of Canada.  Thanks again for all your help.

not really an incorrect name, just a variant. it's nearly always spelt Davies in Wales. You may find David as well in earlier census entries.
The farm names are descriptive of where they are. Llwyndafydd is David's grove. So it could be that the Davies family were there for some time.
I'm struggling with Trewidwal. The tre part is home/homestead, but don't know about the second part.

My Edwards family are from St Dogmaels, so I've searched there before. Not farmers though, mariners like a lot of the local men at the time.

Hi,

Llwyndafydd St Dogmaels was my ancestors home, before the Davies family took over. I have several photo's of the farm which I personally took on a trip to Wales. Would love to share them with you - I was just overjoyed when I actually saw the farm still standing.

In the 1871 Census Trewidal Farm St Dogmaels - the Ladd family have a Phoebe Davies in door Servant aged 15 yrs  born St Dogmaels - This could possibly be the future wife of William Ladd.

Also in the same census is Thomas Davies born abt 1847 St Dogmaels Son in Law married to Hannah Ladd.
Thomas Davies date of birth also fits in for a brother to Phoebe Davies

1870 March qtr District of Cardigan Thomas Davies = Hannah Ladd
Who went on to live at Gawse Llantood Pembrokeshire
