Hello from New Zealand,
Can anyone tell me the name of a Pub in Oulton Place, Chester,1851? It seemed to be on the corner of Oulton Place and George Street.
MY GGGGgrandfather, James Green b 1801 Bedford Leigh, Lancs is living here in 1851. His Occupation" Clock Maker and Publican."
I have done Census address searches 1851 to 1871 but the Pub's name does not appear.
Have also tried to google the address and year, have exhausted my limited options for searching from NZ!
Any clues or information will be gratefully accepted!

There's one that may be it, still open, called 'The Ship Victory'. If that's not the one it's very close.

Thanks for your help folks. "The Ship Victory" Looks very close; I will ask the Halton Library for more information, and go from there.
Haere Mai from New Zealand!

Yes, Oulton Place is gone, as have a lot of other streets. Part of the car park is what was the old cattle market by Cow Lane Bridge, the old drovers' route. there may have been a little pub in Oulton Place, but it was a very small street. (addition) From what you say, 'it was on the corner of Oulton St and George St', it sounds very likely to be the Ship Victory, which is on a corner.

Another site has details of the lost pubs of Chester.
http://www.chesterwalls.info/oldpubs2.html
It has pubs in George Street as follows:
The Shepherd's Arms, number 87 George St. The Market Tavern, number 67 George St. The Royal George, number 31 George St. The Sign of the Board in Wellington St, off George St.
I think it could have been the Royal George as this stands on what I recall is the corner of Oulton Place. Does anyone else agree? I am sure this stood in Chester until not all that long ago.
The street/trade directories would give you the full facts.

Sue I decided to go to the library and look through the many books on Chester they have,of course i got waylaid looking at all the lovely old photos of Chester However i went back to the chester trade directories 1850 and it just gives Under "beer houses" .James Green. George Street,Under the surnames for green it says the same. In the Chester Directory 1864 under street names George Street " from upper Northgate street to Brooke Street" It gives the side roads and lanes as you walk down George street (What I call the off roads)so it says
"Here is Oulton Place" Boardman Mrs Elizabeth, beer retailer Etherington John, Shopkeeper Victory Inn,Robert knowles.
Don't know if thats any help or not, I didn't find any more reference to Oulton Place but Chester library are will probably have more years than ours does.

Thank you everyone for your amazing help and interest in my Chester pub questions.
It looks as if "The R"oyal George or The Victory/ Ship Victory" are the most likely two. I will continue to research and will re post any more discoveries. The photo sites for Chester are fantastic!
Cheers everyone,
From a wet and windy "spring" in NZ, Sue.
