Picking up Certs from Local Offices
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 11:36 UTC (UK) »

Hi guys,

Spotted this and thought i would share.

Quote
Hi List,
I called in at Leeds Register Office yesterday to order and  pick up
a  Death Cert of an Ancestor and spotted a Notice stating that  from the
2nd
Nov 2009 to actually call in at the Office to order and pick up  a
Certificate will cost £15 but order a Cert by telephone or post will still
be £7, is this going to be the same in all Register Offices?

Thanks Christine,
I have been waiting since August for a death certificate from L'Pool, they sent a letter to say it would take 6-8 weeks to process due to exceptional demand.
Just checked the register office site and they now state 8-10weeks!
Now we have a postal strike which will obviously delay it further....What has happened to the days when I received a certificate within a week or so.
I did think of picking it up in person but if it costs that much, I guess I'll wait!

Personally, I'd give your local Reg office a ring and ask them.  Smiley

I think all this may have something to do with budget cutbacks.

Hi

There is no indication on their website but I would be interested to see the exact wording of the notice. Most offices do provide an Express or Priority service for which there are additional costs

If you mean the register office in the city center it look likes the waiting time for certs hasn't change Roll Eyes When started my tree around 2001.I found out dad was born in liverpool (not Stafford) someone said to go to city one, after filling in the form and handing it in I was told 6 to 8 weeks Shocked I screwed it up and binned it Grin.I got it from where he was registered, I sent for it on a Monday and received on Friday, there are 2 placed you don't order certs from Liverpool and southport.Unless you have too of course Smiley

If they are going to charge £15 You will be better filling in the on-line application form next time you want a cert. Then it will cost you a stamp Grin

Celia,
Oh dear, not much improvement over the years, then. Embarrassed
I haven't had to send for many certs, as I go to the Record office at the library and photo/copy any info I need and they have always been helpful there.

The offices don't want the general public turning up for certs, when they can get the companies on Heir Hunters to pay thousands of pounds a year for their services.

I think that hits the nail on the head Lizzie. As ever, the ordinary public get in the way of the corporate bodies and reduce the profit, or increase the costs of the organization concerned.

The death cert arrived today 10 weeks after applying for it in August. Is this a record? Thought I would let everyone know just how patient you have to be.

Jesn - I'd order direct from GRO next time, only £7 including postage.  Usually takes a few days, unless there's a postal strike.
