There is in the parish of Deane records, a marriage which took place in 1617 between Emorus Aynesworth pochianus de Burriie et Anna Cl.

Translating from Latin to Engiish this might read Emor Aynesworth -------- of Bury and Anna ------

But what does pochianus mean?  Elsewhere in the Record pochie is used (eg pochie de Leigh).  I guessed parishioner but there were other examples where the 'pochianus' was omitted and it read simply 'de Leigh'.

The Cl after Anna.  Is this likely to be the first two letters of her surname?

I think that you can be fairly certain that the two terms refer to parish and parishioner - the education of some of the clergy in earlier days left something to be desired and spelling was, in some cases, a rather hit and miss affair.

I'm tempted to think that pochie is for pochiae (of the parish - parochiae) in abbreviated form, similarly pochianus for parochianus = of this parish. Also CI might be an abbreviation for caelebs innupta (unmarried spinster - tautologous, I know!).
           Someone somewhere probably knows better.

Thank you both for your help.
It is a long long time since I did Latin but the explanation fits nicely as do the abbreviations I am aware were used in Registers  Smiley Smiley

The CI seems ok too but I cannot see it used elsewhere in the transcription and it does mean there was no surname for her - but is was a transcription.
