Taunton directory 1890s - BISHOP
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 14:36 UTC (UK) »

My ancestor Fredeick Bishop was born in Wellington, Somerset, and died there in 1901.
His obituary refers to him as having lived in Taunton for some years and having recently returned in bad health.

I am interested to know when and where he lived in Taunton and what he was doing there.
I wonder if anyone has access to any directories or other information that might help me.

He was living in Wellington at the time of both the 1891 and the 1901 census, so he could have been in Taunton any time in the period in beteen, Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Hi lizb

I'm not able to help with Taunton directories but I do have access to some history books for Wellington ......

Would your ancestor have any links with Bishop Bros who ran an iron foundry in North Street, Wellington?
A William Bishop established his iron foundry in 1838 retiring in 1874 selling the site.  His sons established their own foundry in 1872 further down the same street.  I don't know the names of his sons though.  They were engineers, founders and millwrights.

But just having had a quick look through various census William Bishop did have a son called Frederick ......

Does his obituary mention his profession and was he married to Sarah?

Well spotted, that's my family. And his wife was Sarah.

Frederick was one of the three sons who started Bishop Bros - along with his brothers William and Thomas.
Along with researching my family I am writing a history of the firm so am interested in any infomation about it.
Hence my interest in Frederick living in Taunton in the period just before he died. Had he left his brothers and gone on to do his own thing?
THe firm itself was very successful and the eldest brother kept working until he retired aged 89.

What are your books on Wellington - I have Gillian Allen's and have read one by Robin Bush.
And do you have an interest in Wellington yourself?

Hi lizb

I'm a Wellingtonian and generally interested in the businesses of the town.
I too have both of G A's books and access to A L Humphreys' When I was a Boy &
History of Wellington but I don't believe Bishop Bros are mentioned in these.

I think it is great you are writing a history of the firm, I'm sure Wellington's Museum would like to see a copy eventually.
I expect you already know the Somerset Record Office have various documents for the Bishop Bros business?

Sorry I can't help out on your Taunton questions, hopefully someone else can.

Thanks for your encouragement.
I have visited the museum and talked to them about their BIshop artefacts.
I have also discovered the documetns at the record office but they will need quite a bit of time to go through.
The trouble is I live in Surrey and it is difficult to plan visits to do further research - and costly.
I hope to fit in a couple of days next month and perhaps they will have something to help me follow up the Taunton link.
It would be good if I could find a few clues beforehand so I could make better use of my limited time

ANyway  you might spot me wandering around Wellington taking pictures.

Hi lizb

Had a chance today to pop into Taunton Library and went upstairs to the Somerset Studies Library to have a quick look through their Kellys Directories for Somerset:

1883 & 1889 - under Wellington private residents: Bishop, Frederick  Northfield House
                                                                                 Bishop, Thomas Henry  North Street
                                                                                 Bishop, William  North Street

1894 - under Wellington private residents:  Bishop, Frederick  Quantock Terrace
                                                                      Bishop, Thomas Henry  Waterloo Road
                                                                      Bishop, William  North Street

1897 - under Wellington private residents:  Bishop, Thomas Henry  Waterloo Road
                                                                      Bishop, William  40 North Street
(No mention of Frederick in this year)

I also looked under Taunton private residents & commercial listings for all these years and there was only a Frederick William Bishop, solicitor mentioned in 1889 in Bath Place, Taunton trading as Chapman & Bishop.  I doubt this is your Frederick, do you?  The firm is not mentioned again in later years just Samuel Chapman on his own as a solicitor, same place but earlier in 1883.

1900 - Goodmans Directory of Taunton - nothing.

So I wonder whether Frederick was living in one of the outlying villages of Taunton instead?

You might want to visit the Studies Library yourself and see if you can come up with anything more?

Thank you very much for this.
It helps in that it tells me he went to Taunton between 1894 and 1897.
He was back in Wellington in time for 1901 census just before he died.

I note also he had yet another address in Wellington in 1894 - he had moved from 1891. He was a restless individual.
I have just sorted out a couple of years in Bristol and am still working on his trip to Argentina!
I am determined to find out what he was doing.

He was a steam engineer and had worked on the railways so there might be some link to the Railway in Taunton
I have already followed up Bristol and Argenitna railway hisotry so I guess I had better look at Taunton too!
