Hi there,
Mel Pack has recently given me 60 of the "Missing Soldiers" family trees to investigate to see if relatives for some of the 120+ soldiers for whom no family contact has been made can be identified, so that appropriate approaches can be made to them regarding helping with identification.
It's early doors, but I thought other's might be interested in looking at the list which is around half of the remaining "No Relative Contact Group" as there are one or two on it for whom extremely limited information exists so even starting a tree is impossible.
The list with my current update on my minimal progress so far can be found at http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=127761&pid=1288961&start=0&#entry1288961 as a tab delimited text file.
Best,

Update 2 Nov 09
Good news!! I just heard from Mel that a Barron relative of Lt. Louis Barron has been traced in Ireland.
Also, I've just heard that the first string in bow has failed on Marshall WJS, but I do have a backup, so now have six irons in the fire.
Best,
Howard
Update 3 Nov - just heard from male member of PC Baldwin's family who will ring PSVA tomorrow
further update 13 Nov 09 see below

Further update.
6 positive responses so far from a potential 106 mDNA and Y DNA lines of relatives, so progress is slow, but still achievable in some instances.
Howdie
Updated 14 Nov with Categories, so if you fancy helping with this contact MelPack. There's plenty of scope with the ones marked Category N - not started yet It's a bit like playing the game 'Battleships' sometimes you get a hit and other times not. It always puts me in awe of how Nelson managed to track the French Fleet across the Atlantic before the battle of Trafalgar
4.45 p.m. going like a house on fire - 2 further pretty definite m DNA lines identified and letters sent. list updated

I've just come off the phone from another positive contact. Such a familiar story, My grandad went through the Great War unscathed - one of only one or two in his battalion. He never mentioned his cousin had been killed.
I've updated the list again for your info.

Two further positive contacts today, one from a soldier's niece, who included a photo of the uncle she never met and who was grateful for the contact and very pleased that he might be given a proper military burial.
The other from the son of an MDNA line relative whose father sadly passed away two years ago but who still has his golfing cap with hair and skin attached, so he is going to see if this is suitable material for SPVA analysis.
I've sent out some more 'feelers' so have updated my list accordingly.
Best to all,
Howard
18 Nov - one further postive contact and one duplicate (cousin) list updated

25 Nov 2009,
Slow progress this week. One positive contact made and a few that had been queried ruled out

My final tally for this round of identifications, as at 30 Nov 2009, was 17 correctly identified suitable M or Y DNA relatives traced and contacted with a positive response. These responses involved 13 of the fallen, with four "duplicated" respondents, providing for three additional Y DNA respondents and 1 additional M respondent for four of the cases.
Three of the soldiers were UK born AIF soldiers (m DNA respondents in each case), 8 from my original list of 60 and 2 I filched off Mel's lists
In only two instances were the respondents aware of a possible link to the Fromelles investigations and in both these instances, attempts to contact the appropriate MOD section dealing with these matters, (as advertised in their local newspapers) had failed.
It will be interesting to see how the future of the project plays out.
Best,
Howard
