Isaac Charles Balls of Penshaw
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 16:38 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for my great grandfather Isaac Balls' (born 1860) death. The family were living at 27 Garden Place, Penshaw from the 1911 Census (although Isaac is not listed - could have been down the Pit?). He appears to be alive at the time of my grandmother's marriage in 1915 but dead by the time of another daughter's wedding in 1924.
Did all marriage certificates write if the father of the bride or groom were dead at the time of the marriage? Did mines hold their own Census returns for people working overnight? I'm completely stumped on this one!
Any help gratefully received!
thanks

It is not always reliable on the wedding cert, the absence of deceased does not mean he's alive, the vicar might not have asked.  On the 1911 census does it say married or widow against his wife?

Hello

There is a death registration in the last quarter of 1934 at Rochdale for an Isaac C Balls aged 74. The GRO reference is 8e 24.

It seems odd, but it is an unusual name and there does not seem to be anyone else called Isaac C Balls in any earlier documents, other than your man.

Sorry for the delay in replying!
I have just dug out the 1911 Census for the Balls family living at 27 Garden Place, Old Penshaw.
Elizabeth Jane Balls cited as being Head of the family has written 'Married' for 24 years on the Census return. Isaac and Elizabeth married in January 1887 - so this would be right.
She is living with her son, Charles Henry Balls, adopted son Walter Henry Vasey Balls, daughters Isabel Elizabeth Balls and Jane Ann Penman, son-in-law Michael Patrick Penman and granddaughter Jane Anne Penman.
No sign of my grandmother, Florence Lilian Balls who at 14 years was probably in service.
Would Isaac be down the pit on the night of the Census? Would there have been a Census return for the pit?
I will have to investigate the Isaac C Balls that died in Rochdale! That will really have put the cat amongst the pigeons! We thought he had died by 1924 (as per Isabel's 2nd marriage certificate) and Elizabeth moved to Kent with the family in 1927!
thanks for the help!
Best wishes
Sue
