« on: Thursday 22 October 09 17:54 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
Has anyone got any information on James Rawson before 1841?
I know he was born in 1816.
I am trying to take it back into the 1700s
Any information would be appreciated.
I can't find them in archives because I don't know the church.
Please Help.

Where?  There are 5 James Rawsons b 1816 living in different parts of Yorkshire on the 1841 census

Also - ages in 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs so if he was 25 in 1841 - he could have been aged between 25-29 which would affect his birthyear

Did he die before the 1851 census?  If not - what is his birthplace

Hi CaroleW,
Thanks for your reply.
He was born in Halifax.
He is still alive in 1881.
In 1841 he was living in Wadsworth.]
I have him back to 1841, it's before this I want.

Was he a nonconformist or C of E?  This will determine where his baptism records are to be found, hopefully.  The baptism records may show his father's name, or if you're very lucky both parents' names.

Have you looked in the IGI?

On my Calderdale Companion, I have a James Rawson [b around 1817] at

http://www.calderdalecompanion.co.uk/r.html#r1331

Could this be he?  If so, any further information about him would be of interest.

Hi charlotteCH,
He was a Methodist but west Yorkshire archives don't have the records for the chapel in Denholme.
I can't think were to look next.

I am glad that I could help.

My Calderdale Companion website thrives on people contributing information about their forbears, so it would be nice if you could add something about James Rawson and family, rather than just grabbing the information and running!  Anything you could add would be much appreciated, and contributions / corrections / comments keep the website going, although, as I’m sure you can imagine, there are always more people prepared to ask for and use the information rather than to contribute new information

Thanks for the images which you sent.  They should allow me to add something further about the family to my website.  Many thanks; it really is much appreciated

Hi Scamp,

I'll look up what I can in the parish church, Bishops transcript's and noncomformist registers on circa 1816 -1821 in the archives. These are the accurate information source base

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth.

Hi dobfarm,
Thanks for the offer,
I go to the archives myself and have just found out about the non-comformists.
I have no objection to you looking up for me as my time is a bit limited at the moment.
I am looking after a neighbour who is ill at the moment.
I know they went to a methodist chapel in Denholme.

Many thanks

Hi scamp

The 1881 census LDS has one James Rawson birth year  1815 Sowerby and there is one in Sowerby bapt 1814 in the IGI but also one bapt 1814 Warley which near across the valley 1 Mile approx.
Can you define his birth place in all the census years as the same person on the 1851c and later years to his death

Dobfarm

PS Dobby is in  Warwick ! so I will be dealing with this!

HI Gertrude,
Thanks for the reply.
Dobfarm was offering to look in non-comformist records for me.
JAMES RAWSON went to a Methodist chapel in Denholme, I am trying to find his marriage to Zilpha.
The chapel in no longer there.
I didn't know about the non-conformist records.
I go to the archives to do lookups for people, but am stuck at present looking after a neighbor who is ill.
Also who was ASA's parents.

Regards

Hi John,

All weddings took place in the Anglican parish Church's by law then  (Excluding Quakers and RC ) being the nonconformist Anglican alternative but still of the Christian faith. Denholm is in the middle between Hebden Bridge (west), Bradford (East), Keighley (North) and Halifax( South) thus any of the afore said places could been their marriage location. Halifax is the most likely though. I shall endeavour to search for.
