Allan Kirkpatrick Currie - lost in the ether
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 18:57 UTC (UK) »

This is a ggg uncle who I have lost all trace of - Allan Kirkpatrick CURRIE, born 1845 in Deptford (Kent), England. I know he was still alive in 1896 as he sent a religious tract "to the bereaved" for his sister-in-law on the occasion of his brother's death. I have searched UK censuses and can't find him after 1861 when he was a 15 year old engineer's apprentice in London.

Because the tract is dated October, and his brother died in May, it is possible that he was abroad and that's why it took so long for him to get the news and send the tract. A couple of years ago the Australia section of this board tried to find him (and unearthed a different lost uncle, but that's another story!).

Lots of his siblings emigrated, so now I am going to try N America to see if he ended up there. Does anyone have access to census records after 1861 up to the 1890s? Allan Kirkpatrick CURRIE, born between Oct and Dec 1845, Deptford Kent (might conceivably be classed as London from abroad), son of James Charters CURRIE and Rosanna CLEMENT.

I would be eternally grateful for any leads

Jo

You can see census records/transcriptions of census records from 1870, 1880, and 1900 for free here:  http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#  The 1890 Census was almost entirely destroyed by fire, with only a few remnants remaining.  US Census records generally only note the country of birth if people were born outside the US.

Thanks very much for that useful information. Things have moved on since I last looked for records in the USA. Great stuff.
