James Charles Partridge born 1835 Bedfordshire, Eng – came out to Australia around 1850 -1853, don’t know where he landed but (according to a member's submission on the IGI) married Mary Ann Hatfield 20 March 1854 Caledonian Church, Inverbrackie, S.A . Aust. – He died in Broken Hill New South Wales, Aust on 2 June 1919.
Can anyone find me shippimg list records as to when/where he actually arrived, or confirm his marriage - and would that tell me his father ? Trying to find him in UK prior to his emigration.
regards John Partridge, Bedford

Nothing in the BISA - clearly only listed through the immigration record.
PARTRIDGE James born b about 1831 Bedfordshire arrived 1851 aboard the CATHERINE 0ccupation Labourer
I would have suggested NSW death certificates as they are a wonderful source of information but it seems the parentage was unknown to the reporter if this is him......mmm aged 94
PARTRIDGE James died 1919 Broken Hill aged 94 years

Hi John,
My apologies Just noticed I entered Mary Ann's age at marriage as 27. She was 17.
As to the death entry for James I suspect the person did not know much about him. No parents names etc. Seems when Mary passed the informant knew her age and parents names. So they have gone from being close in age at marriage - She dies 1903 aged 67 (pretty good match) He dies 1919 aged 94 ( I don't think so) Probably a pity he did not pass before his wife - may have been more information provided. NSW Certs are often a very good source of information.
I had a bit of a look for James in Bedford the other day and didn't have any luck. Hope you have more luck than I did. I thought I had him - mother Susan which I liked as James seemed to like the name giving it to two daughters but alas the chap I had in mind was still in Bedford in 1851 so not him.
Good Luck
Cheers Kris

Hi John
Following on from your extra info I thought I'd have an explore although you probably have all of this.
It certainly sounds as though some or all of these chaps could have met, some at the gaol or at the workhouse. I can see possibilites in the 1841 census, for each of them (a James Dorrington indexed as Darrington and living at Roxton - 2 miles from Great Barford) all within 10 miles of Bedford, and all around 15 years old (remembering that ages in the 1841 were rounded) and all ag labs - many of them listed at farms with no relatives, which is, I would have thought, another pointer to them being in the workhouse later.
And yes, there was plenty of encouragement for labourers etc to come to Australia.
I see a Levi Mayes reg Wellingborough June qr1849 who could be the child with William and Mary Ma(o)yes. I see a marriage, reg Bedford for William Mayes with Mary Lamb on the same page - Dec qr 1847, which fits your information and is on IGI also at Souldrop. (Just trying to get it in my head!)
I wonder if someone with access to BISA might be able to find some of these people which may give us more clues.
As for the John/James conundrum - it sounds plausible that it is the same chap.
Just another possible: 1841 census shows a James Partridge BiC living at Eaton Socon listed as aged 15, ag lab, with a family surname Squire. Eaton Socon is now in Cambs but is only 5 miles from Great Barton, and was in Beds in 1841.
Enjoy your day at the record office!
Judith
