Hello; I found all these people at the Beds Archives in the workhouse at the same time. Whilst the Bedford Union Workhouse Admissions/Discharges register does not exist for 1850/1851 (the one before goes up to end 1849 & the next one starts at 1852) they do have the Indoor Relief register for the relevant period.

Entries for the period ending Lady Day 1851 (25 March 1851) by parish.

Bedford St Pauls - James Partridge born 1828

Knotting - James Sawford born 1833
                 William Mays born 1827
                 Mary Ann Mays born 1828
                 Levi Mays born 1848

Milton (Ernest) - Edward Edwards born 1822 trade mason, labourer

Great Barford - Stephen Croft born 1829

Common Fund - Jonas Darrington born 1828

They are all in the workhouse in weeks 10 to 19 according to the ledger. I am assuming week 1 is week ending 5th Oct (the next week after Michalmas 29/Sept)  so week 10 ends 7th Dec & week 19 ends 8th Feb & week 26 ends 29/March, but I could be a week out. The Catherine left Plymouth 9th Feb 1851 so it ties in quite well.

John - did you pick up on the fact that Kris said above he was Catholic?
That'd narrow down your choice of Beds churches eh?

There are no Partridge baptisms at Bedford St Paul. The one found on the IGI n Bedford St Cuthberts is James, son of William & Ann Partridge on 21 April 1833. On that same day is his brother Samuel born 24 Oct 1822. I could not find a marriage of William & Ann but I did find the burial of Willam Partridge age 44 on 15 Jan 1835.

However as he was not baptised as James Charles I suspect it isn't the one I'm looking for.

& Carol, thanks, I forgot he says his religion is Catholic, I've only been looking at Anglican registers.

I have just been sent the following from a fellow researcher but there seems to be a date discrepancy. James couldn’t be born 1872 it makes him too old to have had kids (perhaps it's meant to be 1832)  but above that is a mention of James’ parents..... William Henry P and Rosina Caroline Wilcox. I cannot find that pair in the UK as yet, but I have not looked for very long. Can you find a marriage for them in Australia.

Mary Ann Hatfield, daughter of Joseph Alexander Hatfield  and Rachel ( Mary) Davis, was born on 10 Aug 1837 in The Tiers South Australia, was christened on 7 Aug 1838, and died on 19 Oct 1903 in Broken Hill New South Wales aged 66.
Mary married James Charles Partridge, son of William Henry Partridge and Rosina Caroline Wilcox, on 20 Mar 1854 in Woodside South Australia. James was born on 28 Mar 1872 in Magill South Australia and died in Broken Hill New South Wales.
Marriage Notes: in the marriage register it says they were married in the calidonian church Inverbrackie

Hi John,

From SA Records we know James married in SA in 1854. The date is wrong - probably so is other information. James was not born in SA, by what we can see he arrived in 1851.

It is claimed Mary Ann was born in SA. - I can find no record although there was a son born in SA and baptised at Holy Trinity in 1841. (Pre Civil Registration.) SA was only proclaimed in 1836. (Very little white activity prior to this time)

BISA

HATFIELD
Joseph arrived by 1837 occupation Sawyer, Farmer residence Woodside, Mt Barker religion C/E
married Rachel nee DAVIS children Mary Ann PARTRIDGE 1837-1903, Joseph Alexander 1841, Rachel 1845

I dont see a birth listed for Rachel in 1845 but there are births in 1855 and 1857

would have to wonder if this is the same couple

HATFIELD Joseph arrived by 1840 occupation Sawyer residence Adelaide religion C/E married Mary child Jane Adelaide 1840-1840

Jane Adelaide was baptised at Holy Trinity in 1840 (residence Weymouth St Adelaide) Mother is listed as Mary

Hi Kris,    Thanks for the reply,

- I think this new data is a bit flawed. On FreeBMD I found a marriage of Rosina Caroline Wilcox in Sept 1865 at Lewisham RD vol 1d page 1172; another name on that page is William Henry Partridge.

On 1861 census living at Forest Hill, Lewisham is a Rosina Caroline Wilcox born 1825 London who is wife of John Wilcox, and they have a 17 year old daughter Rosina C Wilcox born1844 London. I cannot find William & Rosina on 1871  census, so perhaps they emigrated & did have a son James in 1872 - but it was not him who married Mary Hatfield.

Hi John

Yes they did marry , on 7 Sept 1865 at Stoke Newington. His dad was of the same name, a gentleman and hers Isaac Wilcox a clothier. Both were listed as of full age.

One of the witnesses is a Partridge- can't read it very well but will try and darken it if it's of any use to you?

Thanks Carol, ....  on 1861 census Isaac Francis age 19 was brother to Rosina, both children of John Wilcox. I wonder if he was Isaac John, if he's the name of her father. Both John & Isaac were down as Tailor & Draper.

Anyway before we go off on a tangent - this family has no (as far as we know) link to the James Charles of Bedford - so no need to dig further on them.

Next ....  I have just been contacted by someone else who is investigating these passengers from Bedford.  He says..... Also among the young men from Bedford was Jonathan Hodgskins who is listed as from Northamptonshire, age 20.  Actually, in 1841 he had been there living with his grandparents, but he was from Yieldon, Bedfordshire. The clerk at the Bedford Record Office provided a copy of the assisted immigration book and these young men are listed there. They were all given passage to Australia.

Bedford record office has an 'assisted emigration book'??  What does it contain - just people from Bedford, immigration just to Australia, just to one state??

This could be a useful resource.

Suppose I should contact them and ask about it.

Judith

Hello Judith,  I will be doing similar later today.

There's a related topic on GenForum that has a possible death of James Partridge in Adelaide in 1854

Hi John,

That death record does exist, so there were two James PARTRIDGES of similar age in SA. If this is the Bedford James from the CATHERINE then I wonder who married Mary Ann Hatfield Undecided

There does not appear to be a James arriving in SA in 1845.

PARTRIDGE James 24 Status, relative, death place, residence  not recorded Ade 3 93

Response from the Beds Archives

The record you need to look at is ref. PUBC2/6 (Volumes 1 page 455-6). The volumes are presently indexed by subject (Emigration) but not yet by name, though I hope to index these in more detail soon.
The list includes the name, age (three categories - above 14 years, 7 - 14, under 7), paid for by the common fund or a parish, where emigrated to, name of vessel and date of embarkation
.

I might go in next Tuesday afternoon to take a look. I know ref 'PU' indicates Poor Law Union so this suggests the workhouse organised this.

Judith did you get a reply too ?

Hello John

Yes I had a very quick response - the person must be wondering what all the excitement is about Bedford Workhouse!  Interestng what you say about the Workhouse having organised the passages.  I heard a talk last week about Lacemakers of Calais who were originally from around Nottingham and had to return there because of unrest in France in the mid 19C.  From what I understand their passages to Australia were organised in a similar way in Nottingham which implies it was a fairly common practice at the time.

She also added

The book includes all kinds of correspondence about other topics as well as the lists of those emigrating, and is 1215 pages long. South Australia is the destination in this instance but we have a wide array of records which include details of Bedfordshire people emigrating, mainly to America, New Zealand and Canada.

Some of our records are available to search online via http://blars.adlibsoft.com and we have an index of prisoners in the County Gaol, many of whom were transported to Australia : http://apps.bedfordshire.gov.uk/grd/

Good luck on Tuesday
