Bangor War Memorials
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 20:17 UTC (UK) »

Hi  Smiley

Does anyone know if there are lists available of inscriptions on the Bangor War Memorials? Trying to find a relative of mine who died in WW1 in France, 1917, Francis Nash (born in Bangor).

Any help would be appreciated

Many thanks

L.

Hi,         The Bangor Civic Society web site have the names of 8,500 people from N. Wales who died in WW1.         They are listed on the Memorial Arch in Bangor and cover every parish in North Wales.  I have had a look and the only Nash from Bangor is a A. Nash.         Have you tried the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site as they have several F. Nash listed (www.cwgc.org) but you need his regiment etc.     I have had a quick look but cannot find any of them with  Bangor connections.     Good luck, Gwyn.

Thanks Gwyn

I've found his grave in Crump Trench British Cemetary, Fampoux, France, but was wondering whether he has been mentioned on any of the memorials in Bangor.

Many thanks again for your help

The main Memorial at Bangor has an A Nash whilst the one in the Cathedral has Alfred Nash, RWF. None on the University Memorial and none on the Hirael Sailors Institute one. Neither is there a Nash on the Post Office memorial or the Royal Garrison Artillery memorial next to the main memorial. There are however many more memorial in the churches, chapels and various other institutions such as the Railway.
There is no Alfred (or any starting with A) Nash on GWGC as being in the RWF. Neither is there one on Soldiers Died Great War (SDGW) or the Overseas Index (deaths). There is no Alfred Nash in Medals with a RWF connection.

The SDGW details for your Francis is Frank Nash, enlisted Colwyn Bay, reside Llandudno. Unfortunately it does not give the crucial 'where born' It does however say that he was previously Pte 36815 in the RWF. Unfortunately it doesn't seem as if his records have survived.
In you research is there any possibilty of Francis having a middle(or first name) of Alfred?
I've seen the 1901 entry which is straight Francis. Have you been able to do the 1911. If you have access could you check for an Alfred Nash in Bangor which may tell us if we are talking about two different persons or not.

Gwil

Edit: There is no Nash under Llandudno on the Memorial Arch refered to by Gwyn

Just had a quick look at the 1911 census for a Nash in Caernarfonshire and there does not appear to be an Arthur or Alfred.  Francis is there though with his brothers Ralph Carroll (30), Thomas Henry (14) and sister Elizabeth Ellen (25) all born Bangor and resident at 43 Caellepa, Bangor.  The younger siblings are resident in 1901 together with their parents Ralph C (48 born Ireland) and Ann E (43 born Bangor)  at the same address; the younger Ralph C is a servant at the Castle Hotel.

You probably knew all this anyway and it has nothing to do with War Memorials.  But I thought I might put my ten pence worth in.

There is a Williams family tree on Ancestry.com with the following entry
Francis Nash b. Sep 1897 in Bangor Caernarvonshire Wales
Death 21 July 1917 in Fampoux, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France
Parents are listed as...
Ralph Carroll Nash 1853 – 1902
Ann Ellen Humphreys 1858 – 1910
Is this your tree or is someone else researching your family?
The family in Caellepa probably knew my grgrandfather

Thanks Gwil, Nesta and WelshGen Smiley

Gwil - the family bible only has him down as Francis Nash - was hoping that he would have had a mention on a memorial somewhere in the city, but doesn't look like he did.

Nesta - thanks for the info, hadn't looked at the 1911 census yet Cheesy Did it say what their professions were? (sorry to be cheeky)

WelshGeb - Yep, that's my family tree on Ancestry Smiley Just found the unmarked grave for Ann E. Nash and a number of children she lost (she lost 8 children before they reached the age of 1 from 1889-1900) in Glanadda cemetary. Still trying to find out how they died.

Once again many thanks for everyone's help, it's much appreciated

Kind Regards

Hello

Ralph (Jnr) was a Wireman for a telephone company (progressive )
Elizabeth is just down as housekeeping
Thomas Henry is down as a grocer's errand boy
and Francis is at school.  Hope this helps

Interesting to note that on a quick browse of the 1891 census there seems to be no sign of the family - maybe they're in Ireland ?   Found them - mis indexed as Mash ! at 43 Caellepa.

Have you managed to find Francis' war record - I have found a Great Uncle's but not his brother's (both Pritchard).  The one I have found was a POW in the Middle East taken 1917 and died of TB in Oct 1917 - I have sent for his death certificate as it seems he was in allied hands when he died.
