US Army
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 20:58 UTC (UK) »

Hi,  not sure where to start looking for the information I am after - so figured Roots was the place to come!!!!  Am wondering where I can find information about who would own some land.  During "the War" it was given/lent/commendered by the US Army,  they built a bridge over a ford, which is now maintained by the local council.  Some of the land that borders on the river appears to belong to no one now.  Does anyone have any idea about where I start trying to find out what happened to the land when the US Army left the area?  thanks,

The Land Registry holds details of all land. But be quick as they have just announced 700 job cuts. You may need a large scale digital plan of the site from the OS. These are used in planning applications and so are very expensive. So I would start with a free look from Google Maps.

All land has a number recorded in the surveyors field book and its acreage. If the area is covered in a re-print of the c1906 OS plans available from Alan Godfrey Maps you will get the parcel details from that time. This is a good starting point when parcels of land have been broken up.

The local council may also have 1 to 1024 scale plans from the 1930s and 1950s, showing before and after views. These are also available from an agent of the OS Historical Map Department, but they are very expensive.
