Where is Newbridge??
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 23:05 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I just received my great grandmother's birth record(Mary Elizabeth Baker).  It states that she was born in Newbridge, County Wicklow.  Can anyone tell me where Newbridge is???  I can find a Newbridge in Kildare but not Wicklow....Help...Please!!

I dont know of a Newbridge in Co. Wicklow... what district details are listed on the cert ?

Towards the top of the form there be details for
Superintendent Registrar's district
Registrars districts
district
union
and County

these should help narrow down the possibilities.

there's an place close to Castlemacadam which apparently has Newbridge as an unofficial name - see : http://www.traveljournals.net/explore/ireland/map/m2147806/newbridge.html

The registration district for this area is Rathdrum. There also seems to be a couple of registrar and electoral districts named Newbridge...

Is the writing for the address on the birth cert clear ?

It lists Rathdrum as the registration district.  I did a little research last night and found that Newbridge was renamed Avoca....Whether this is accurate or not , I don't know.  She was born April 28, 1874 in Newbridge, in the County of Wicklow to James Baker of 13 Strand Villa in Clontarf (Which I guess is in Dublin) and Charlotte Forrester.  The birth, however, was in Newbridge...probably where her family was...

Thanks..

Had a look at the Co. Wicklow map in Lewis’s Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (1837) and just to the north east of Castlemacadam is a town and a bridge over the river Ovoca - labelled New Bridge.

there's no bridge shown at the location on a later map (c1840).

I had another look at the 1840s map and realize I was not looking at the same stretch of the River Avoca .. so I didn't see that the bridge. The area just to east of the bridge is captioned Newbridge and in the townland of Kilmagig Lower. The area is about 200m south of where Avoca town is now.
