There are a number of possible entries on the IGI but without more info it would be impossible to determine the correct one.  As well as Oldham itself - he could have been baptised at Manchester Cathedral

There was also the 1783 Stamp Duties Act which charged the parents 3d  to enter the child's name in the Parish register.  Many chose to put food in their mouths rather than money in the taxmans pocket.
