Whitaker/Simpson - marriage
« on: Friday 23 October 09 01:48 UTC (UK) »

Hi all.
I am in desperate need of help to find a marriage.
Details are as follows, and, as you will see, my gentleman in question has changed his name Roll Eyes

John Simpson
born/baptised as John Whitaker, mother - single woman, Elizabeth Whitaker, bp in 1815
Likely father is John Simpson as Elizabeth Whitaker and John Simpson (blacksmith) married in Kildwick on the same day.

In 1841 John Whitaker married Susannah Mitchell in Manchester, however he went under the name of Simpson, the marriage certificate stated that he was a widower and his father was John Simpson - blacksmith
Not long after the marriage, they left for Australia.
The shipping records state that John Simpson's parents were John Simpson and Elizabeth Whitaker and that he was born in Kildwick in 1815.
The children of John and Susannah Simpson appear to be all born under the name of Simpson, married under the name of Simpson and died under the name of Simpson.

John Simpson (whitaker) died sometime between 1852-1855, his death date has not been found but his wife remarried in 1855, to a James Haslam.

Now his wife, Susannah (Haslam) died and in that certificate it states her first husband was John Whitaker.

Oh dear, I do wish they would make up their mind.

Now it is the first marriage of John Whitaker Simpson I am trying to find.
remember - born 1815 and married (2nd time) in 1841.
I have looked at the Kildwick parish registers and two possibles - under name of Simpson but they are not the right ones.
So either under name of Whitaker or Simpson, does anyone have any ideas of where I can look for this first marriage. Please.

I welcome any ideas  Wink

Well, I guess it could be anywhere!

He was baptised in Kildwick - but by 1841 he was in Manchester. The family  could have moved there at any time during his childhood, or he could have moved there in adulthood either before or after his first marriage. And he could have lived (and married) somewhere else between Kildwick and Manchester!

Were there any children from the first marriage? If so their place of birth might help plot his movements.

Otherwise, I would suggest Manchester is the place to start (though there are probably millions of parishes there) - you know he was there in 1841. Was second marriage before or after census? Have you found him on 1841 census?

Hi Liz,
sorry he was baptised at Ickornshaw, as was most of his siblings.  His parents were married in Kildwick.
The family lived in Kildwick for a very long time.
He was only married a very short time in Manchester before they got on the ship, we believe they only went there to marry just prior to departure.

There does not appear to be any children from the first marriage, if there was, he never took them with him to Australia.
They were on board the ship when the census was  taken  Roll Eyes

thanks for all your suggestions, it really is a tough one to work with.

regards
