57th Irish Fusiliers on foot
« on: Friday 23 October 09 01:50 UTC (UK) »

Huh Does anyone have any information on the 57th Irish Fusiliers
The 57th arrived in New South Wales during 1826 serving at Van Diemens Land, Sydney, Victoria South Australia and the Swan River colony.
The regiment was transferred to Madras in March, 1831. where they stayed in until 1846 when they returned to England, and then Ireland
I have not been able to find much out about this regiment and I would appreciate hearing some anyone who knows more about it or perhaps had a relative in the same Regiment

If you search for 57th using series code WO97 on the NA Catalogue - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp - you will get 1574 hits for men who served with them and were discharged before the end of 1854. These are the surviving records on microfilm in Kew. They were indexed by the Friends of the PRO/NA. They have been digitised by Findmypast and they will be putting them online - they quote 'by 2011'.

In the meantime you can Download Results into a .csv file and then into a spreadsheet. You can then analyse a number of things including where the men came from at different periods. Even in pre-railway times the recruiting Sergeants would have travelled far and wide, so they will not all come from the same place.

If you don't know what .csv means you need to ask someone who is good with spreadsheets.

If you can visit Kew or are willing to employ a researcher you can look at their muster books which will tell you where each man was on the first of each month.

btw..the Royal Irish Fusiliers were the 87th and 89th after merging in 1881. The 57th were the West Middlesex Regiment of Foot who merged with the 77th in 1881.

As Ken says, the reason you will have found out nothing about the 57th Irish Fus is that there was no such regiment.  Wink

The 57th (West Middlesex) Regt was in New South Wales from 1824-31 so they would seem to be the regiment you need to research. The 87th Irish Fusiliers were elsewhere.

What paperwork, can you share?
Trust me, 57th Irish Fusiliers never existed. Your cousin should stop trying.

Just like today some things are not what they seem, some were paper only regiments which would acount for you having paperwork try another thread to find out who were the paper only regiments. Stores wages etc were drawn for them and the spoils used to prop up the officer class of the time.

If I had to hazard a guess without seeing your paperwork, I'd say it's probably talking about the 87th Irish Fusiliers and the "8" looks a bit like a "5".

The simple explanations work best!   Wink
