Kiwi and the Cat - Merry Christmas
|
Hi There,
I am trying to find more info on this family. I have just had an email from a second cousin of mine who is Sarah Ann Waite’s granddaughter.
She does not know much about them at all.
This is what we have so far
Sarah Ann WAITE was born 3 August 1876 in Christchurch and married William George THOMPSON January 1900
Sarah had two brothers. William WAITE was born 1879 and Joseph Auckland WAITE was born 1885. Their parents were Joseph Mandel WAITE and Mary FISHER according to Sarah’s Marriage certificate.
All 3 children were born in New Zealand. I have checked the Church Card index at Christchurch Library and found nothing on this family.
I have not been able to find anything on her brother or parents all and need some help in where to look next
Thank you for your help as this is all I know so far.
I know it is not much to go on. I have also looked at Papers Past as well and do not see anything there at the moment.

Hi Newbe,
Wonder if someone mistranscribed "Mandel" as Manuel ?
The NZSG holds a certificate for Joseph Manuel Waite.
Cheers KHP

yes the "Certificates collection" has always been snail mail, with SAE for return.
Some of the other collections are by email.

This is a smail bit I have now from the family
Quote: Grandma Sarah Ann Waite was born in Christchurch on 3rd August, 1876 to Mary Fisher and Joseph Mandell Waite. She was the second and only daughter. She had three brothers, Edward Mandell (born March 1872), William (born February 1879) and Fredrick Sydney (born July 1881). In approx 1883, the family moved to Auckland – Joseph was a cartage man with a horse and cart. They lived in Grey Lynn and they had another baby girl whom they called Clara, however, at age three months, she fell off the table and died. Mary also died in 1885 when Sarah was nine years old. Ted, who was the oldest, had to leave school to help with the family. Ted was 14 and would try and sneak back to school whenever he could) because he loved going to school.
When Sarah was 11 years, in 1887, the family moved to Peria near Kaitaia. This land was given to men to try and populate the rural areas. Father Joseph got 50 acres and Ted got 50 acres – the other boys were not old enough to qualify. Joseph built them a little house and then, with the help of all the boys, set about clearing the virgin bush from the land. Sarah became the mother figure for the family. Soon after Ted and Willie left the north. In 1899, Sarah married William George Thompson whose family also lived at Peria, About this time Joseph left – some say he went to Australia to look for gold, others say he went back to England to find his roots and family monies. He was never heard from again. Sarah and William had five children while they lived at Peria, Harry Mandell (1900), Ivy May (1902), Edith Eileen (1904), Violet Mary (1906) and George Edward (1908). Fred moved into Kaitaia and became a cartage contractor, first with a horse and cart, then he had one of the first trucks that came to the north. William was always drinking and one day he came home drunk and threatened to shoot the family. Sarah put the children in the wardrobe and then fought William for the gun. Then she locked him out of the house. The next day, 11 th August 1911, she sent for her brother Fred to move her and the children into town. Ray and Henry Matthews provided her with a house on the main road between Kaitaia and Awanui. In return, she had to milk their cows and make the cheese for their small cheese factory. Clem Matthews (brother to Henry and Ray) lived in the “big house” next door to Sarah. Theirs was the house that never really got finished. At this time, the eldest child, Harry went to live with Clem Matthews. Harry worked for Clem and Clem sent him to school. The property at Peria was sold at £ 100 for 100 acres. In September, 1912, Fred married Ada Hoskins so Sarah, being kind to her brother, let them have the house and cheese making and she moved, with the four children, to Dunn's farm in Kaitaia and sharemilked for them. The following year, they moved to Hesters farm in Kaitaia and sharemilked for them. In August, 1914, Sarah bought 50 acres in Church Road, Kaitaia. It had a two roomed house on it but was way off the road in a gully, so she had it transported, by horse, up the hill, closer to the road. She had a lean-to build on the back for a kitchen and a window in the front room and a porch built across the front of the house. End Quote
