I think to start yourself off you need to gather your facts together. Ascertain if she is married - if Ball is her married name you need to discover her maiden name and an approximate date of birth. You should be able to search and find the entry in the BMD indexes - either on an online source, such as Ancestry.co.uk or Findmypast.com, both of which require either a subscription or in the second case, pay per view. However, your best option might be your local Record Office or library with a family history section who have the BMD indexes on microfiche for you to search for free.
When you have found the birth entry for your auntie take a note of the year and quarter, volume and page numbers, and you will have all the details you need to order the certificate from the GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ which will give you her parents names, including mother's maiden name taking you a step nearer finding their marriage.
You will find a lot of useful advice to help you get started on the Beginners Board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,47.0.html

hi,sorry mary but i'm leading you up the wrong path here,my auntie ann is alive but i think living down oxford way,i'm trying to find where stanbanks fits in,my father thinks it was a relative from the doyle line probably great grandmothers maiden name? anne doyle.the doyle link seems to end at the address shown in the early 1900s but there was an edmund doyle (spot cash doyle ) as he was known so maybe they moved on?

Well doing a search of the indexes there are no entries for an Ann Stanbanks anything, in fact the only entry with Stanbank as a middle name in Lancashire is
Louis Stanbank Breslauer 2nd Quarter 1867 Chorlton 8c 590

Two more on the 1929 Kelly's Directory at no 93. Usually OK to post these:
Annie, marine stores Norman, sand mer (merchant?)
Can't see any Stanbanks, but it is a very long road! It could well be a surname from a generation or two earlier.

Graham, try an advanced search on the 1911 census: http://www.1911census.co.uk/
click 'full person search' then when that screen opens choose 'show advanced fields'. Put Doyle in the surname box, then under Location, enter Lancashire as the county, Salford as the district and 93 Clowes in the 'residential place' box. you get Annie, Peter, Norman, Edmund and a younger Annie. Not Albert though. If you remove the number 93, you get another Doyle, Bernard. For the full details you have to buy credits and view the image or transcript. But you do get years of birth, so you can start moving backwards now.
Again, no Stanbanks showing up in 1911 Salford.
