Hi I am trying to trace a marriage for Arthur Hope Binns b. 1875 Burnley and Nellie Egan, place of birth or date unknown. They had one child in 1903 Thomas Arthur Binns and lived at Dale st. Accrington. according to Thomas birth cert. Arthur was the father and Nellie Binns nee Egan was the mother.
Arthur Hope Binns was ist married in 1892 Habergham Eaves to Clara Nove Plant. 1911 records Clara Plant nee Binns living in Burnley and a widow. Arthur Hope Binns however is living at Hollingwood Oldham with his son Thomas Arthur. A bit of a mystery. I have tried everything Free BMD Lancs BMD. Family Search, to find record of a second marriage to Nellie Egan with no luck. Anyone out there with any ideas please.

If they separated without being divorced, which is probably likely at that date, then it's very probable that he didn't marry Nellie but she may have just taken his name while they were living together.

When you registered a child in 1903 did you have to provide a marriage certificate as you do today.

Things were very much more lax then, and even when there were rules that should have been followed you will find numerous occasions when they just haven't been.
