Cummertrees MIs
« on: Friday 23 October 09 09:42 UTC (UK) »

I have been researching Alexander Tweedie for a number of years and have recently been sent the following transcription of an MI at Cummertrees Old Cemetary
Quote
In Memory of Alexander Tweedie, who died at Dumfries, 11th April 1815, age 33yrs.. Also Mary Hair, his spouse, who died at Kellhead, 8th May 1837, age 53yrs.. And Evan Tweedie, their son, who died at Hoddom Castle, 3rd Nov 1848 age 36yrs.. Also David and Richard, his sons, who died in infancy.. And Jane Douglas, his niece, who died at Hoddom Mains, 26th July 1848, age 16yrs.. Also James, his son who died at Kellhead, 22nd July 1851, age 8yrs.. And David Tweedie, who died at Ecclefechan, 12th Nov 1860, age 50yrs.. Also Jane Irving, wife of Edward Tweedie, who died ?? Nov 1875, age 64yrs.. And ----- Irving, wife of David Tweedie, who died at Kellhead, 19th Dec 1876, age 7? yrs.
I have no record of an 'Edward' as part of this family, but I am missing an 'Evan' and his family. I wondered if this could be a transcription error. Perhaps on the stone it doesn't have the full word 'Edward' but 'Edwd' or similar which might be a misread for 'Evan'.
Is anyone in a position to go look, and perhaps take a pic and send it to me?

Any help appreciated

thanks - I have all that information, and have followed Joh Baxter (Barker)
through all the censuses, with his 2 wives and 2 children - he is my direct gt....grandfather.

My family pares show Evan as his twin. It is the 'Edward' that puzzles me.

Yes - theMI mentions evan, died 1848, it is the reference n the Mi -"Jane Irving, wife of Edward' that is puzzling

the reason you cant find evan 1841 is because he is listed as ebenezer  he is the gamekeeper on hoddom estate        young john was a ploughman in ruthwell ladyhall 1861  in the 1891 census he is in north sheilds with wife ellen born nsheilds children christina sarah jane peter alexander and elizabeth   csc

Hi Allan,

I liver along the road at Ruthwell and can have a look for the stone tomorrow (weather permitting) if you still want someone to check it out.

CSC - thanks for all that - it will need some 'digesting'
Intend to get Janes DCert from ScotPeople later this week -at this time out of credits

MORAG - as you say - weather permitting -
yes I would appreciate your having look, and maybe a piccy (he says hopefully)
but - its unlikely to move anytime in the near future - so no rush, choose a nice day.

Thanks All

I know nothing of Alexander's birth, only can estimate from MI, place unknown.

There is an Edward in Troqueer in 1841 - dont know if its relevant.

CSC - how did you find Even on 1841??

From Ancestry website 1841 transcriptions
1841 Gamekeeper Hoddern M
Ebenezer Iwudise 35
Agness Lowsie 20

Well - would I ever have found that -who is Agness??- if his wife was Jane?
did you see original or transcrip?
