First car through after the rains (South Africa)

Royal Artillery in South Africa late 1860's
« on: Friday 23 October 09 09:54 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I have an ancestor born "Cape of Good Hope" South Africa in 1869. He father was in the Royal Artillery at the time. Any ideas as to what the Royal Artillery would have been involved in at that time in this part of South Africa, or where they would have been based?

Hi Chris

Army Lists of the time do not mention the locations of the RA. They just give the number of the depot, brigade or horse battery of the officers, without saying where they were based. The RA would have manned the ports and forts along the coast. And there would have been mobile field artillery companies and mountain batteries that could travel inland.

Have you searched on Findmypast for the birth in the Cape? The birth certificate would give the location and may give the father’s company. Or you can go to Kew and look for his papers, or wait for Fndmypast to put them online – due 2011.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I have looked through FMP and there is no record (tried variations of spelling as well). I do not have much info on the father so was hoping to see if I could narrow him down before heading off to Kew. All I know is a name, place of birth/age and a rank in 1871. I have also looked on familysearch with no luck  Huh
