Mary Ellen when did she die?
« on: Friday 23 October 09 10:03 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone please help me find when my great grandmother died.
I have just spent over one hour searching records and cannot find her.
Mary Ellen Beer, nee Haycox, was born in 1892, in Poolsbrook, Staveley. She died sometime after 1973, as my husband can remember going to see her when we first met, about that time.
She lived in Mastin Moor for the last part of her life, so will be registered in Chesterfield.
I just can't seem to find her.  Sad
Thank you.

Hi,
Could Mary Ellen possibly have been widowed and married again? Only supposition but there is a marriage in Chesterfield for a Mary E Beer  in July/Aug/Sep 1946. If you look that up  find her spouse then there is a death in Jan/Feb/Mar 1976 in Chesterfield for a Mary Ellen B- - - -, dob June 1892.
Won t give surname as relatively recent.
I can t find any children born to this marriage which may suggest she was an older bride.

Best wishes

Hi Cathy,
Mary Ellen was widowed, I only remember her as a very old lady, living on her own.
I have just been looking for the death details of her husband George Beer, who was born in 1888, in Staveley. I thought I had them, but I don't, and I can't find those either.
I MUST be doing something wrong, though I don't know what. It must be one of those days where nothing goes right.
I found the marriage you found, for Mary Ellen in 1946, but couldn't find the death.
I suppose it's possible she married in 1946, and was widowed a second time.
Thank you  for your help, Anne.

Hi Anne,
I ve had those days too!
Depending on which site you are using, if you go to Death Index 1837-1983 and put in Mary Birks, JFM  1976
the page should come up.
It gives Mary Ellens birth as June 20 th 1892 , i see on freebmd she was registered in  3Q 1892 so its a possibility.
Bit of a long shot but sounds possible, unfortunately the only way is to purchase certificates really unless someone in the family can remember something.
Best wishes

Just a thought , if you know Mary s last address and have access to phonebooks on Ancestry you could have a look under Beer or Birks.

Hi Cathy,
I was looking in the death index on Ancestry.
I have just looked again, as you instructed, and I found the entry. Smiley
Now as you said I would have to purchase the death certificate, and maybe ask my uncle if he can remember, though he, and Mary Ellen parted on bad terms a long time ago, according to him.
I'd better not say what he calls her.
I have a rough memory of where she lived, I could possibly check up on that.
Thank you for your help, I appreciate it,
Anne. Smiley
