Those impossible SMITHS
« on: Friday 23 October 09 11:46 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for help with my wife's Smith family in Marylebone.

I have this family in 1841:

1841 census St Marylebone:
Eliza Smith 35 Shoe binder Y
James 13 Y
John 9 Y
William 7 Y
Edward 4 Y
Eliza 3 months Y
Reb Moody 60 Shoe binder Y

And again in 1851:

1851 Census Marylebone:
2 York Street, All Souls District
James Smith 22 Shoe Maker b Marylebone
John brother 18 Shoe Maker "
Edward brother 14 Shoe Maker "

Trinity District
Eliza Smith mar 49 Shoe Binder London
Elizabeth Johnson mar 22 Needle ? London

Eliza says she's married in 1851 but in neither census can I see a husband. John Smith gives his father as Thomas at his marriage to Jane Castle in 1858 and I would expect Thomas to be a shoe or boot maker given the occupation of the rest of the family.

Rebecca Moody also seems to have a place in the family as she's also living next door to John and Jane in 1861, but I haven't yet worked out how she fits in.

Can anyone help me find Thomas, please? Or make a suggestion which might help me move forward with this family?

Many thanks,
John

Hi redshank

I have had a dig around but as I'm sure you know already, nothing seems to jump out as a nice juicy lead. Couple of questions:

* Do you have a birth record for baby eliza in 1840/1841 - that birth should be registered and is quite specific for babe to be 3months old and we know the area so even if you end up with a number of contenders, you would be able to do the reference checking with mother=eliza.

* Do you have REbecca Moody in 1851 - I had a brief look and didn't see her - suspect she's hiding under a mispelling but didn't want to spend too long on it if you had her already.

* Is Elizabeth (who becomes Johnson) an older child? Do you have more on her? Don't see an obvious marriage for her to be Smith/Johnson in the right timeframe. Could she be a child from before the marriage to Thomas I wonder?

best wishes

Hello dilly,

Many thanks for having a look for me - I'm most grateful.

To answer your questions, I don't have the birth certificate for Eliza, but I agree it might be possible to find it. There are four births registered in the first two quarters of 1841 for Elizabeth Smith in Marylebone - no Eliza, I'm afraid. If she was 3 months old when the census was conducted in early June 1841, she should have been born within those quarters. Perhaps the best thing is to send for the certificates with a request that they check for Thomas as father and Eliza as mother.

I don't have Rebecca Moody in 1851 - I suspect you're right and she's mis-spelled or mis-transcribed.

I don't know who Elizabeth Johnson is either, I'm afraid. I have wondered whether she could be a child of Eliza by a previous marriage, especially if Thomas and Eliza married in the gap between Edward in 1837 and Eliza in 1841. If she is Thomas's daughter, then she and James would be twins based on their ages in 1851. However, why isn't Elizabeth with the rest of the family in 1841?

Many thanks for your thoughts,
John
