Co. Home Rathdrum
« on: Friday 23 October 09 11:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi All
I wonder if someone one can give me some  advice on Co. homes in Rathdrum My cousin was born in 1947 on his birth certificate it has residence of informant SR. M. St.Roch Occupier Co.Home Rathdrum.  His mother was unmarried at the time so had to leave him there . Would he have stayed at this place or would he have been sent to a children's home. His mother went on to marry 2 year's later (not my cousins father) Her husband's mother and father agreed to take my cousin and bring him up as thier son.  What my cousin would like to know is if they adopted him as he was brought up with thier surname or would it have been some agreement with the family.  He can not remember how old he was when he left the home he said he may have been about 2 year's old. He said he was about 8 year's old when he found out that the Aunt  next door was his mother.  He over heard people talking. What he would like to know is  if he was adopted  and if there would be a reported about when he was at the home and what age he was when he left it.  Is there anywhere he could write to to find out this information.

Don't know much about adoption in ireland for 1940s but this Barnardos paper might be of interest (pages 4/5 have historical details)-
www.barnardos.ie/assets/files/pdfs/adoption_fostering_october_2008.pdf

Someone else was looking for details about a 1930s birth in County Home, Rathdrum and mentioned "I believe the Home is now St. Colman's Hospital."

Sorry, I've been to Rathdrum but no idea about children's home there. Hopefully someone else that know the area will be able to answer your question.

There was another post some time ago about a birth in Rathdrum home - I'll try to find this discussion and post a link..

from what I remember the Workhouse was used as the county home (i.e. for births, long term ill etc) after independence. If there was a children's home it would probably have been located nearby, or part of, the same buildings.  Comparing Griffith maps against modern maps I believe St. Colman's Hospital is at a separate site, but close by.
