Welcome to Rootschat. Have you found them in 1911 census yet? www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search Where does the address '149 Government Cottages' come from? if not from Elizabeth's birth certificate- what's the address on her birth certificate? Only mention I could find so far for 'government cottages in Co. Londonderry is this: "One representative expressed the view that the provision of rural housing should not be in estates but in single or double houses, perhaps in the manner of the old government cottages built by the Housing Trust and district councils in the 1950's." http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/issues/segregat/temple/twopol1.htm Checked index to civil registration for birth of Elizabeth Hassan but can't see any that seems to fit the name and date.

John, This is all a bit tenuous but I leave it up to you.
According to the 1911 census a widow, Annie Hassan, age 40, was living in the townland of Magheraskeagh in the parish of Aghanloo with 6 0f her 8 children and her single sister Maggie Butcher. I have found a marriage of Anne Butcher to James Hassan in Bellarena RC Church, Magilligan on 31 Oct 1893. The parishes of Aghanloo and Magilligan are next to one another. I cannot find Elizabeth Jane in the Census.
Regards

Thanks all so much. What speedy helpful responses.
Shanew - I think the Elizabeth at Main may be my gradmother who if this is her, was in service at the age of 16 (which does fit with a bit of what we know). Government Cottages is still a mystery.
Kingskerswell - that could be Annie but I'm not sure there were that many children.
Agahdowey - great site! I'm reporting back to next week to my mum and her sister and might be back with more questions as we begin to piece this together.

I wasnt thinking yesterday, Hassan was my grandmothers married name. She married my grandfather Robert Hassan who was born in 1906 in Artikelly. However i cant find any mention of him or his father on the census, his father was James Hassan, there is mention of a James Hassan of 13 years of age. Dad says if they werent in the house on the night of the census their names wouldnt have been recorded. This Annie Hassan of Aghanaloo therefore is my great grandmother, my father knew she had a large family but a few of them died young, but Robert was the oldest and had brothers called Isaac and Thomas and a sister Bella and Elizabeth otherwise known as Lissie who moved to Scotland in her early life. I wonder is this your relation? They lived in one of the labourers cottages which were otherwise known as government cottages. This is so interesting, the picture of the census was amazing.
