James CLEPHAN
« on: Friday 23 October 09 19:51 UTC (UK) »

If anybody out there is descended from Fife CLEPHANS, you might be interested in the story of Lt. James CLEPHAN who served on HMS "Spartiate" at the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805, after which his appreciative crew presented him with a Union Flag which was preserved by his descendants, until it was sold at auction the other day, astounding everybody by going for 20 times the asking price. It was bought for £384,000 by an unnamed collector.

James CLEPHAN was born around 1768, allegedly in the parish of Scoonie, according to one account I read, but on the IGI I can only find a person of that name born in Kennoway in 1769. James started life as a weaver, was taken by a press-gang as a young man and worked his way up through the ranks in the navy.

He died in Edinburgh in 1851.
