Watkins family Galway 1870's
« on: Friday 23 October 09 20:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I am looking for any information relating to Joseph & Ruth Watkins ( nee Moore) both born Huddersfield Yorks abt 1847.

They marry in Huddersfield in 1865 and had two children - William Watkins (1866) & Mary Watkins (1868) - both children are born in Rochdale, Lancashire.

I cannot find an 1871 England census record.

Another daughter is born - Sarah Ellen Watkins (1870) and on the 1881 census her place of birth is Galway, Ireland.

In 1876 Agnes Watkins is born but back in Rochdale not Ireland.

On 1881 census Ruth has remarried and is a now a stansfield living in Rochdale with her children from Joseph & new children from James Stanfield.

Please can anyone help me find out why they moved to Ireland and back again within a six year period, Also did Joseph die in Ireland - I cannot find a death record? Meaning Ruth can back to England to have Agnes?

Any help gratefully received! Thanks

Hello  Smiley

quite a puzzle!

Firstly how much info do you have on the family?
Do you have Agnes' birth? I can't see one  Sad I can see an Agnes Watson  Undecided
I was thinking that this would give you perhaps the last known information about Joseph - his occupation; was he the informant?

If he is the Joseph I can see in 1861 he was a mechanic. He may have moved to Ireland with his job - through an employer pehaps?

You say Ruth has remarried - do you have the certificate?

I can see a possible death for James' wife, Betty so that would leave him free to marry but I can't see a marriage for James and Ruth.  Undecided

I have also looked in Irish BMD's - nothing - so am not very helpful I am sorry to say.

Very intersting puzzle here. IGI (www.familysearch.org) lists 4 children of Joseph Watkins and Ruth Moore with one, Sarah, born in Co. Galway in 1870- however, it is a submitted, not extracted, record and need to be verified.
Therefore, I checked index to civil registrations to see the district that Sarah's birth was registered and there doesn't seem to be any possible birth in 180s/1870s for Sarah in Co. Galway.
It is possible that the submitted IGI record is basing Sarah's birthplace on the census record (also suspicious is the fact that only a year is given, not an exact date of birth).

a bit of the mystery solved here  Wink  indexed as Wathin (ancestry.)

1871 RG10; Piece: 3832; Folio: 129; Page: 47

35 Cambden Street Bootle

Joseph Watkin 26 yrs Grinder b Huddersfield
Ruth 25 yrs b Huddersfield
William 5 yrs b Lancashire Blue Pits
Mary Jane 3 yrs  b -do-
Sarah E 2 yrs b Ireland

Sarah consistently gives Ireland and on one (?) census Galway

**Blue Pits was the former name of Castleton where the family are in later censuses - lots of engineering and cotton there so I do wonder if he was sent briefly to Ireland to work perhaps.
