Bedem Chapel, York and the liberty of Saint Peter, York Minster. Name: Sotheran
« on: Friday 23 October 09 22:30 UTC (UK) »

Hi there

I wonder if anyone can tell me about this place?  I have an ancestor christened there on 23 January 1823 named Thomas Sotheran, mother Ann (b.c. 1793)  and father Richard Sotheran.

I've done a Google and there's very little information on this chapel.  A further clue comes later one - by the time of the 1851 census Thomas was with his mother in London.  Thomas's place of birth is given as "the liberty of saint Peter".  I also Googled this and its very interesting - appears to be an inner precinct of York Minster which had its own governance, police force etc up to the 1820's.

Anyway, could the "Bedem Chapel" be a part of the liberty of St Peter?  Or is it part of the minster itself maybe as a side chapel?

I hasten to add the sirname "Sotheran" has to be THE most misspelled name I have ever come across.  Over the years its Sotheron, Sotheran, Southeron, Southeran, Southerton.... the list goes on.  Makes them tricky to find!

Thanks in advance - I do hope someone out there can shed some light.

I think is is actually Bedern Chapel.   You might get more hits trying that on Google.   Have you looked at www.genuki.org.uk?    That usually has information about the churches.

Ah yes!  Bedern - it was mistranscribed on the IGI record.

Thanks for the link too.
