the family of Bridget Coffey/ Gregan/Ford?
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 02:30 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

I am hoping someone will be researching the Coffey family.

I am looking for information relating to Bridget Ford, formerley Gregan nee Coffey born about 1883.

She married Alfred Ford  in 1910, he was born in 1885.

I have no idea where the Coffeys were from, but both Alfred and Bridget are buried in the Stratford Kopuatama Cemetery.

Bridget died in 1950, Alfred in 1972.

My connection is with Alfred,  he was sent to prison is 1903 and released in 1905,  unfortunatly from there I cannot trace him, Alfred Ford was a very common name.

I have found no record of any children born to them on BMD.

Any snippet would be gratefully recieved.

Thanks for reading

Leandra

This is speculation, but:

Bridget Coffey born 1882.  Bridget (Mary) Coffey m Joseph John Gregan in 1906

Joseph John Gregan died 1907 aged 28.

Age of Bridget Coffey would fit age of Bridget Ford at her death.

Hi Leandra
any children will not show after the 1909, 100 year cut off at BMD
Have you looked at burial records/newspaper notices for the couple.

Bye
Althea

There is a probate (Wellington Archives) for bridget and some land transmission documents (LINZ HAmilton)
(ref NZSG index CD) which could be followed up to give more family info

Hi,

If Bridget  is the one you are after, born in 1882, then her father Timothy is probably the one who arrived on the "Assaye" (London 3/9/1874 arriv. Auckland 3/9/1874). He married Mary Moriaty in 1881 (4 or more children). Check the passenger list for occupation or origin (google-  Assaye & 1874 & Auckland). He also may be the same Timothy who paid road rates in Geraldine/Peel Forest in 1881 (see Papers Past - Timaru). Interestingly a James Coffey arrived in Timaru on the "Merope" (Gravesend 1/7/1875, arr. Timaru 23/9/1875), a farm labourer aged 25 - perhaps a brother?
Both should be in the 1871 and probably the 1861 census somewhere in GB.

Cheers

Hi MalNZ,

Welcome to rootschat Cheesy

That does sound the right dates for Bridget, thank you so much for the wonderful information.  I have been struggling with Bridget and Alfred, discovered her first husband died in Wellington of heart disease age 28, interesting though that she may have come from Peel
forest, not to far from me.

Cheers
