Bennett : Aspley Guise and Old Cleeve (Somerset)?: Completed
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 04:24 UTC (UK) »

Dear All,

I'm sure someone already knows the answer to this question - if you do, please help me straighten myself out. I'm in a bit of a muddle here over the family of John Bennett and his wife Elizabeth. I have 17 possible children, but have read earlier in another discussion thread that they only had 14. If anyone could provide the names and dates of the 14 correct ones, that would be great - I could then eliminate the 'ring-ins'.

My real puzzle, however, comes from the places of birth of these children and trying to work out what the family did. I have John Bennett (Snr) b. 1768 in Old Cleeve, Somerset, marrying Elizabeth in Old Cleeve in 1792; but then I seem to have collected 11 children born in Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire and 6 children born in Old Cleeve, Somerset within the 17 possibles. The pattern of these seems to indicate that the family moved back and forth a fair bit. (?)

Did this branch of the Bennett family really move backwards and forwards? Looking at the map, it seems a long way for those times. Have I got something else wrong? Is the Somerset connection incorrect?  Huh

As always, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
OzJen

Looks like two families to me, which you're trying to mix and match. Why would you think that it's one family?

Member submissions on the IGI give births in Somerset in 1792-95-97-02-04-06

There are 12 extracted baptisms in Aspley Guise 1794-96-98-99-1-04-04-06-07-09-11-12 (just put in the John Bennett and Elizabeth in the parents' boxes, British Isles, and the Batch number)

There are too many possible overlaps for it to have been one family shuttling back and forth between Beds and Somerset

If you check the parish registers, you might get lucky and the occupation of John in each place might be given - if someone has then Aspley Guise transcript it will be shown there if it's in the PR

Which parish did your ancestor come from?

In 1841 in Aspley Guise was John Bennett 70, wholesale drover, and Elizabeth Bennett 68, both born Beds. If you say they were born in Somerset I would definitely say they were two different couples. There was also a Lydia Bennett 24 living with them in 1841 - I can't see her baptism but she may have been another daughter (she appears to have married Joseph Hopkins in 1842 at Aspley Guise - her marriage cert would show her father)

Hi David,

I too am wondering if I have 2 families here.  Seems more likely to me, which is why I'm feeling muddled. If I hadn't read in posts from others that there were 14-15 children in the family and, from others, that the family originally came from Somerset, I wouldn't have thought twice about it; I would have just separated them and moved on after taking a 'wrong turn'. I notice that some on Ancestry have the same links between Somerset and Bedfordshire that I have, so I'm not on my own!

Thanks for the info, which I will follow up.

Cheers,

Good afternoon;   From the Aspley Guise parish records; all the baptisms of children of John & Elizabeth Bennet say he's a carpenter. There's no suggestion of a link to Somerset anywhere.

cheers John
