BENNETT: Old Cleeve and Aspley Guise, (Bedfs)?: Completed
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 04:25 UTC (UK) »

Dear All,

I'm sure someone already knows the answer to this question - if you do, please help me straighten myself out. I'm in a bit of a muddle here over the family of John Bennett and his wife Elizabeth. I have 17 possible children, but have read earlier in another discussion thread that they only had 14. If anyone could provide the names and dates of the 14 correct ones, that would be great - I could then eliminate the 'ring-ins'.

My real puzzle, however, comes from the places of birth of these children and trying to work out what the family did. I have John Bennett (Snr) b. 1768 in Old Cleeve, Somerset, marrying Elizabeth in Old Cleeve in 1792; but then I seem to have collected 11 children born in Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire and 6 children born in Old Cleeve, Somerset within the 17 possibles. The pattern of these seems to indicate that the family moved back and forth a fair bit. (?)

Did this branch of the Bennett family really move backwards and forwards? Looking at the map, it seems a long way for those times. Have I got something else wrong? Is the Somerset connection incorrect?

As always, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
OzJen

Hi OzJen,

I agree with David on Beds thread. This is certainly not the same couple

Child Somerset 3 Mar 1899 one Beds 13 Jan 1799
Child Somerset 7 Oct 1804 one Beds 8 Mar 1804 and another 25 Nov 1804  Undecided
Child Somerset 20 Apr 1806 one Beds 16 Jul 1806

Old Cleeve Records

Let us know if it is the Somerset family or the Bedfordshire family you are interested in and we will complete one of these threads.

Hi Kris and David,

I too am wondering if I have 2 families here.  Seems more likely to me, which is why I'm feeling muddled. If I hadn't read in posts from others that there were 14-15 children in the family and, from others, that the family originally came from Somerset, I wouldn't have thought twice about it; I would have just separated them and moved on after taking a 'wrong turn'. I notice that some on Ancestry have the same links between Somerset and Bedfordshire that I have, so I'm not on my own!

Cheers,
