Hello I'm a first timer and in need of help. I can trace my ancestors Farren to Middleton Cheney but I can't find any information about William Arthur Whitehouse before 1891 then living in West Ham. He is married to Sarah Farren by then with a birth place of Banbury. Later his birth place is Paddington but I can't trace him on any census. He was born c 1868. I am off to Banbury today and will visit Middleton Cheney but don't hold much luck as I'm not sure what to do when I get there. Any help will be gratefully received! Thanks

Is this the 1891 you refer to ? They are in Lambeth, not West Ham! RG12 401 126 15 37 Camelia? Rd Lambeth William Whitehouse 24 bn Banbury Sarah 23 bn Middleton Cheney May E 4 bn MC Sarah R 2 bn Battersea Florence E 8 mths bn Wandsworth Lambeth
Have you got one of the childrens birth certs? if not how do you know Sarah's maiden name?
I cant see a , Whitehouse/Sarah Farren marriage at the mo - have you found their marriage? That would be the next step, as will (hopefully) give Wm's father's name and occupation and therfore make him easier to spot on earlier censuses, if he is with his family.

btw - I forgot to say - welcome to Rootschat!
Here is the 1901 census (I know you have it, but it makes searching easier if all the facts are laid out, well I find it so anyway!) Looking at places of childrens births they certainly move about a lot.
RG13 1625 104 43 13 Gosport Rd, WAlthamstow, Essex
William 33 Gen labourer bn Paddington Sarah 32 bn Northampton MAy 14 bn Northampton Sarah 12 bn Battersea Flora 10 bn Battersea Elizabeth 8 bn Battersea William 6 bn Greenwich Charles 2 bn Walthamstow Nellie 3 mths bn Walthamstow

most of the childrens birth regs seem to be on FreeBMD, bu tI couldnt see May's
However, it looks as if she was born before the marrige (assuming the Farren maiden name is correct)
Birth Jul/Aug/Sep 1886 Banbury ref 3a 895 May Elizabeth Farren
still cant see a marriage - beginning to think they didnt actually marry. But without the cert it will make tracing Wm back harder ....
PS just one more question, sorry, where did his middle name come from? It is not on either census! So if you have found him elsewhere do share all that you have about him ... it will help with the search.

Hi lizdb I'm new to this and finding it difficult to know what to do. Hope I contact you okay. I know William Arthur Whitehouse's middle name because my dad lived with him when he was a boy and my mum knew William Arthur too as they lived in the same street. I have had contact with a distant cousin who gave me the lead to his wife's name Sarah Farren. I have just got back from a visit to Middleton Cheney where Sarah was born. No luck at the churchs there but I have an e-mail address to try. I have 1891 census details, 1901 and 1911 details too but am looking for the elusive wedding certificate so I can trace William Arthur back to his dad. Sarah is no problem. I'm not sure they did marry but will try to investigate further tomorrow at the registration office for the area. Thanks for your help so far and if you find out anthing further I'd be really grateful. Redrita

Hi lizdb Also forgot to say sorry I mixed up the place they were living at. I am doing both my dad and my mum's family history and I get mixed up sometimes! How easy is it to use FreeBMD? Redrita

FreeDMD is very easy - and free!
It is the basic starting point for all family historians.
Have a browse on it yourself - get the feel by looking for people you already know about.
Have a look at the links at the beginning of the beginners board on here for useful sites and tips. Especially this one looks good: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,381764.0.html

Appears with Mother Susan in 1871, born Newgate, Kent (London?) lodging with the Ellis family. RG10/878/59/28
