Armstrong progenitor
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 09:05 UTC (UK) »

Hello All,
Some have claimed that the progenitor of the Armstrong surname was Adam 'Armstrang' de Ulvesby (Ousby). He is supposedly mentioned in various records, namely extant Pipe Rolls, Chartularies etc. He was apparently listed in 1223 as Witness, Charter of Wetheral Priory
1235 Pardoned for killing (a possible poacher in Inglewood Forest?)
1245 Witness, Charter of Lanercost Priory
It was said that the Armstrongs were Verderers & foresters during that time.
My long-winded question is:
Has anyone seen this Adam listed as 'Adam Armstrang', in the records , or have previous researchers merely 'guessed'  that he was indeed an Armstrong?
I know this is a long shot, but hope perhaps one of you may have seen Cumberland records 'in the flesh' & perhaps remembered the name.
Many thanks,
Bob
